Peter Anthony Inge, Inge Baron KG GCB PC DL (* 5. August 1935 ) is a British field marshal , the last to 1997 from 1994 Chief of Defense Staff of the British Armed Forces was. From 1997 to April 2016 he was a Life Peer member of the House of Lords .

Life

Officer and staff officer

After attending school Inge began his military career and joined the Green Howards infantry regiment in 1954 as a soldier , serving in Hong Kong , the Malaya Federation , the Federal Republic of Germany , Libya and Northern Ireland . On July 27, 1958, he was promoted to lieutenant . After he was aide-de-camp of the commanding ( General Officer Commanding ) of the 4th Infantry Division between 1960 and 1961 and was promoted to captain on July 27, 1962 , he served as an adjutant to the chief of the 1st Battalion of the Green between 1963 and 1964 Howards.

Inge graduated from Staff College Camberley in 1966 and was then employed in the Ministry of Defense between 1967 and 1969 , before he was company commander in the 1st Battalion of the Green Howards until 1970 . After studying at the Joint Services Staff College (JSSC) in 1971, he became a major in the 11th Armored Brigade and was promoted to lieutenant colonel on December 31, 1972 . Between 1973 and 1974 he was an instructor at Staff College and was then until 1977 Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion of the Green Howards, where he was promoted to Colonel on December 1, 1976 . From 1977 to 1979 he was in command of the so-called "Junior Division" of the General Staff School.

After his promotion to Brigadier General on December 31, 1979, Inge was the commander of the 4th Armored Brigade between 1979 and 1981, and thus of Task Force C of the Rhine Army . Chief of Defense and Member of the House of Lords

On February 14, 1992 Inge succeeded Field Marshal John Chapple as Chief of the General Staff of the British Army and held this post until he was replaced by General Charles Guthrie on March 15, 1994.

Then he was promoted to field marshal. As such, he succeeded Marshal of the Royal Air Force Peter Robin Harding as Chief of the Defense Staff and kept this position until he was replaced again by General Charles Guthrie on April 2, 1997.

After retiring from active military service Inge was the 1995 honorary doctorate of civil law of the Newcastle University has been and between 1996 and 2001 Constable of the Tower was, by a Letters Patent of July 21, 1997, entitled Baron Inge , of Richmond in the County of North Yorkshire , raised to Life Peer. Lord Inge, who was President of Pilgrims from 2003 to 2010 and has served as Chairman of the Council of King Edward VII's Hospital Sister Agnes since 2003, became Privy Councilor in 2004 . He was Chairman of the Board of Aegis Defense Services from 2006 to 2010 and has been a member of the Council of St. George's House at Windsor Castle again since 2011.

On April 25, 2016, he retired under the provisions of the House of Lords Reform Act 2014 and left the House of Lords.
