The defense district command 87 was a defense area command of the Armed Forces with the seat of the bar in Neubrandenburg . The main task of the command was the territorial defense in its defense district.
history
Lineup
After reunification , the territorial structures known from West Germany were quickly created in the former military district V of the land forces of the National People's Army (see the structure of the territorial army around 1989 ). The Defense District Command was planned to take over Army Structure V in the early 1990s as part of the Territorial Army and subordinated to the Commander in Defense Area VIII . Based on the civil administrative structure in West Germany, the defense district should roughly correspond to a (future) administrative district . When setting up, however, the layout of the new defense district was initially roughly based on the Neubrandenburg district known from the German Democratic Republic . Change to military area command I
On October 1, 1997, Military District Command VIII was dissolved. The leadership of the Military Regional Command in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , including the leadership of the Military Regional Command 88, was the Military District Command I transferred.
Enlargement of the defense area
In line with the reduction in the number of defense district commands in other countries, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania no longer had Defense District Command 88 on March 31, 1998 . Since in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, unlike in some other East German states, no administrative districts were set up, the redefinition of the defense districts did not have to be based on the areas of responsibility of state central authorities . The eastern part of Defense District 88, which roughly corresponded to the Rostock District of the defunct German Democratic Republic, was incorporated into Defense District 87. Defense district 87 now (very) roughly corresponded to Western Pomerania .
Change to the armed forces base
In 2001 the territorial army was disbanded. The military area commands and defense district commands were subordinated to the newly established armed forces base . The defense areas and defense districts were fundamentally reorganized and their number reduced. Defense district 87, which was redesigned in 1998, remained unchanged; Defense District Command 87 continued to be subordinate to Defense District Command I “Coast” . The subordinate defense district commands were dissolved and some of its tasks were transferred to the newly established district liaison commands.

The Defense District Command was decommissioned in 2007. Some of his assignments were transferred to the newly established Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania regional command and the subordinate district liaison commands.
Association badge

The Defense District Command did not have its own association badge due to its planning as a predominantly non-active unit . The few active soldiers therefore wore the association badge of the superior military area command .
As a "badge", the internal association badge of the staff and the staff company " pars pro toto " was sometimes used imprecisely for the entire defense district command. As a reference to the stationing area, the internal association badge contained elements from the coat of arms of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and from the coat of arms of Neubrandenburg . It appeared as figures the Pomeranian Griffin , the Mecklenburg bison head and the Neubrandenburg city gate with the piercing helmet with red feathers Brandenburg eagle , which in turn is also reflected in the country's coat of arms. The Iron Cross is the national emblem of the Bundeswehr.
