From 1995 the designation was "Wehrbereichskommando VII / 13th Panzer Grenadier Division ". Lineup

After the accession of the new federal states , the Bundeswehr became the successor to the National People's Army in East Germany . From October 1990, defense areas and defense area commands were planned in the new federal states, analogous to the tried and tested structure of the territorial army in West Germany . From November 15, 1990, the staff of the Military District Command VII essentially took over the leadership of the Military District III of the Land Forces of the National People's Army with staff in Leipzig, which existed until reunification . The large units of the National People's Army deployed in Military District III , essentially the 7th Panzer Division , the 11th Motorized Rifle Division and the 4th Motorized Rifle Division , were decommissioned. Defense area VII specifically comprised the states of Saxony and Thuringia . Subordinate defense district commands were planned on April 1, 1991 . The following defense district commands were set up:

The Military District Command VII was initially subordinate to the Bundeswehr Command East and was subordinated to the Corps / Territorial Command East for integration into the Army on July 1, 1991 .

The merged military area command

As early as July 1, 1991, Military Area Command VII for taking Army Structure V was combined with the troops that were intended for the planned 13th Panzer Grenadier Division. The reclassified military area command received the new designation "Division / Military Area Command VII".

After the group of the Soviet Armed Forces in Germany (GSSD) withdrew from the East German garrisons, the integration of the East German units into the NATO command structure and the field army could begin in accordance with the two-plus-four treaty . The divisional shares of the "Division / Wehrbereichskommando VII", which had previously been part of the territorial army, were reorganized as the 13th Panzer Grenadier Division . The subordinate homeland security brigades were renamed accordingly to tank brigades or tank grenadier brigades . On January 1, 1995, the name was changed to "Wehrbereichskommando VII / 13. Panzergrenadierdivision". In the event of a defense, the merged staff would probably have been separated again. The Military District Command would also be in the defense case remained part of the under national command Territorial Army; the divisional shares would have been subordinated to the corps and thus indirectly to the NATO headquarters. After the dissolution of Military Area Command VIII , the "Military Area Command VII / 13th Panzer Grenadier Division" also took over command of the troops in the southern part of the "old" Military Area VIII, ie in the states of Berlin , Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg .

resolution

On October 1, 2001, the "Military District Command VII / 13th Panzer Grenadier Division" was separated. The territorial army was dissolved as a part of the army . The 13th Panzer Grenadier Division continued to exist as an independent division . On July 1, 2001, the staff of a "new" Military District Command III was reorganized in Erfurt . For this purpose, parts of the personnel of the military area command VII were used. As part of the newly established armed forces base, the "new" military area command III took over the command of the troops and the organization of territorial defense in the "old" military area VII. The "old" military area command VII was decommissioned on October 1, 2001.

Association badge

Woven association badge of the military area command VII

The military area command carried a union badge with the following blazon :

" Tied by a silver cord with woven black thread, divided into black, red, gold in a golden central shield a one-headed black eagle , the head turned to the right, the wings open, but with closed plumage, beak, tongue and fangs of red color ( Federal eagle); the middle shield below accompanied by the black Roman numeral  VII. "

The shield division corresponded to the flag of Germany . The motifs of the association badge were also similar to the coat of arms of Germany . The federal eagle was the German heraldic animal . He was depicted similarly on the troop flags . The close reference to the coat of arms and the flag of Germany made it clear that the territorial army and its military area commands remained under the authority of the national commander even in the event of a defense and were not assigned to NATO .

The association badges of the command authorities in the territorial army were particularly similar. In particular, the association badges of the higher-level territorial commands and the other military area commands differed only in their labeling. Also, the Badge of the Ministry of Defense was up on the board almost identical. The silver / black braided border of the military area commands symbolized the position below the Federal Ministry of Defense, which accordingly had a "higher quality" golden cord.
