List of units of the armored infantry troops of the Army of the Bundeswehr
The list of units of the armored infantry troops of the Army of the Bundeswehr contains all resolved, active and non-active (equipment units) Mechanized Infantry associations (including infantry formations and major formations ) of the Bundeswehr as well as a brief overview of their time of preparation, deployment, and, where appropriate, its dissolution or renaming.
Numbering conventions
Divisions
Until the end of the Cold War, the divisions of the Army were alternately set up as a tank division and an armored infantry division. The armored infantry divisions were those with an even number. Exceptions were the 8th and 9th Divisions, which were set up as the 1st Mountain Division and the 1st Airborne Division . After that, the numbering of the divisions began again with a tank division (10th division), so that the 11th division was set up as an armored infantry division despite its odd number. As a result of reclassifications or protracted lists, however, this numbering convention was partially deviated from. For example, two Panzer Grenadier divisions were temporarily reclassified to Jäger divisions (second and fourth division). Later armored divisions, which did not (yet) reach the full target equipment, were initially referred to as armored infantry divisions. This affected the 1st, 7th and 12th divisions, which initially operated as the Panzergrenadierdivisionen. The Panzergrenadierdivisions established before 1959 were also called Grenadierdivision at the beginning; like all grenadier units they were motorized. The "East German" divisions (13th and 14th) were set up as Panzergrenadier divisions.
Brigades
Until the early 1990s, the brigades were numbered according to their subordination, with the following only applies in principle. In individual cases, when the brigades were drawn up and other circumstances, the numbering of the brigades was not stringent. The 36 brigades of the field army were numbered consecutively from 1 to 36. The brigades in East Germany set up after 1990 were given the numbers 37-42. Each division should lead three brigades. Brigades 1, 2 and 3 belonged to the 1st division, the brigades 4, 5 and 6 to the 2nd division, etc. The 1st mountain division was the 8th division in this order and counting method. The airborne division was ranked 9th. The later established brigades of the territorial army were numbered consecutively starting with 51.
- Example:
- Brigade 20 was subordinate to the 7th Panzer Division (arithmetically: 20 ÷ 3 = 6.66 → round up → 7)
Armored divisions led two armored brigades and one armored infantry brigade, armored infantry divisions one armored brigade and two armored infantry brigades. The first brigade in each division was an armored infantry brigade, the third an armored brigade. The second brigade was therefore an armored brigade in an armored division or an armored grenadier brigade in an armored infantry division.
- Example:
- Brigade 16 was the first brigade of the 6th Division , hence an armored infantry brigade .
- Brigade 17 was the second brigade of the 6th Panzer Grenadier Division , hence an Armored Grenadier Brigade .
- Brigade 18 was the third brigade of the 6th Division and therefore a tank brigade.
From 1981 this principle was extended to the numbering of the mountain division by converting the Mountain Infantry Brigade 22 into the Panzer Grenadier Brigade 22. This now also led an armored infantry brigade as the first, an armored brigade as the third and a second brigade, analogous to the division designation as the mountain infantry brigade.
Major exceptions until 1990 were
- The 7th Panzer Grenadier Division did not set up the Panzergrenadierbrigade 20 because it was actually intended as the second brigade of a 7th Panzer Division. This "missing" Panzer Brigade 20 was only finally set up in the early 1980s and the division became a tank division.
- The Panzergrenadierbrigade 28 only existed until 1970. A Brigade 28 newly established in 1975 was set up as a tank brigade, in contrast to the usual designation of the 1st Brigade of a division. Brigade 30, i.e. the third brigade of the 10th Division , was no longer a tank brigade from 1981, but was reclassified into Panzergrenadierbrigade 30 . From 1981 the names of the first and third brigades of the 10th Division were "swapped".
- The 12th Division set up its first brigade as a tank brigade. Even after the division was converted into a tank division, the second brigade was not reclassified into a tank brigade, but remained the 35th Panzer Grenadier Brigade .
After the end of the Cold War, the numbering was often no longer adapted to the actual subordination for reasons of tradition. An example of this is the Airborne Brigade 31 established in 1993 , which only kept the 31 in its name out of tradition . The names of the newly established brigades 37 to 42 still show certain similarities to the old systematic numbering. Since 1990, the designation Panzergrenadierbrigade or Panzerbrigade no longer indicates a specific structure.
Battalions
Until the 1990s, beginning around 1959, the numbering of the battalions followed a stringent logic that resulted from the subordinate relationships. In the early years of the Bundeswehr until around 1959, the numbering was inconsistent. The number conventions presented below are only intended to give an overview of the names of the armored infantry units. In the context of reclassifications, troop attempts or in the course of a protracted line-up, there were always exceptions. The list in Army Structure IV is most similar to the system presented here.
The numbers of the armored infantry battalions of the brigades began with the number of their brigade. A final digit was appended to this number. Therefore, there were two-digit numbers for the battalions subordinate to brigades 1-9 and three-digit numbers for the brigades subordinate to brigades 10-42. The battalions beginning with number 56 were subordinate to the Homeland Security Brigade 56 , which was the most highly mechanized brigade of the Territorial Army.
- Example:
- The Panzergrenadierbataillon 21 2 was the second battalion of the Panzer Brigade 21 .
- The Panzergrenadierbataillon 1 2 was the second battalion of the Panzergrenadierbrigade 1 .
The final number indicated which battalion this was within the brigade. Each tank or tank grenadier brigade had an tank grenadier battalion ending with 2. Panzer grenadier brigades also had other tank battalions ending with 1 and 3.
- Example:
- As a tank brigade, Panzerbrigade 21 had only one Panzergrenadierbataillon with the number Panzergrenadierbataillon 21 2 .
- The Panzergrenadierbrigade 19 as an armored infantry brigade had three armored infantry battalions with the numbers 19 1 , 19 2 and 19 3 .
At the beginning of the 1980s (Army Structure IV), battalions were temporarily set up in the tank and tank grenadier brigades as mixed formations (tank troops / tank grenadiers). They each had a 1 as the final digit, a combination of digits that had not been assigned in tank brigades until then. An exception was the Mountain Tank Battalion 8, which was also mixed and was directly subordinate to the 1st Mountain Division (8th Division) as a division battalion. The battalions of the Panzergrenadierbrigaden were named Panzergrenadierbataillon ~~ 1, those of the tank brigade were called Panzergrenadierbataillon ~~ 1.
- Example:
- The Panzerbrigade 21 newly placed on the Panzerbataillon 21 1 .
- In the Panzergrenadierbrigade 19 , the previous non-mixed Panzergrenadierbataillon 19 1 was renamed and reorganized as a mixed Panzergrenadierbataillon 19 1 .
The mixed tank battalions are not included in this list, see the list of tank units of the Bundeswehr . There were also tank destroyer and anti-tank mortar units temporarily integrated into tank infantry battalions.
The numbering has been adjusted in the event of a change of subordination or reclassification. As a result, the battalions were renamed many times, some even several times. Therefore, there were also battalions with identical numbers that had no common line of tradition, but instead simply assumed a number that had been “released” according to their subordination. This stringent numbering has since been abandoned. In the event of reclassification or changes of subordination, the number is now often retained by tradition and, in the event of reclassification, only the tank grenadier battalion is brought into a form corresponding to the new service category or function. During the formation of the "East German" Brigades 37 to 42, the numbering was no longer strictly adhered to. Therefore, today's numbering is often only an indication of the “origin” of the battalion. In the early years of the Bundeswehr, the armored infantry battalions were initially referred to as grenadier battalions (not differentiated in the list).
At times, additional names were added to the names of the battalions, which indicated their function or equipment, but were not part of the name in the narrower sense. In the early years these were the suffixes (MTW) for battalions equipped with the M113 , (mot) for battalions powered by trucks and (AFZ) for battalions that already had the HS 30 . After the end of the Cold War, the designations (KRK) were used to designate the crisis reaction forces . In contrast, the designation (HVK) stood for the battalions of the main defense forces . Today's force categories are marked with an ( EK ), ( SK ) or ( UK ).
