Gabriele Beger

Gabriele Beger (born April 24, 1952 in Berlin ) is a German librarian and lawyer .

Life

After training as a library assistant , Beger studied librarianship at the technical schools in Leipzig and Berlin until 1976 . After completing a second degree in law from 1984 to 1990 at the Humboldt University in Berlin , she received her doctorate in 2002 at the Philosophical Faculty on the subject of 'Copyright and electronic library services - a conflict of interests' as a Doctor Philosophiae.

Beger worked at the Berlin City Library from 1971 , from 1992 to 2005 as its director. From 1990 to 1992 she was also admitted to the bar. From 2005 to 2018 she was director of the Hamburg State and University Library . Beger has been teaching at the Humboldt University of Berlin, Institute for Library and Information Science, and as an honorary professor at the Department of Information Sciences at the University of Applied Sciences in Potsdam, “Law for Library Information and Documentation”. Since 2007 she has also been teaching at the University of Hamburg, Department of Computer Science, Information Management Law and Copyright .

In 2008 she was the first German to be awarded the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation's John Jacob Astor Award for her commitment to numerous associations . In 2018 she also received the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class.

  • 2006 to 2009 Chairwoman of the German Library Association (dbv) and board member of the Federal Association of Library Information Germany eV (BID)
  • Chairwoman of the Copyright Committee of the German Cultural Council
  • Representative of the German Library Association in the library royalty commission of the Conference of Ministers of Education
  • Joint official data protection officer of the University of Hamburg, the State and University Library Hamburg, the HCU, HfMT and HfbK and the TU Hamburg-Harburg
