Joachim Schwatlo-Gesterding

Joachim Schwatlo-Gesterding (born March 2, 1903 in Stralsund , † January 27, 1975 in Bonn ) was a German officer who was a major general in the Wehrmacht and a brigadier general and most recently a lieutenant general in the Bundeswehr .

Life

Schwatlo-Gesterding joined the Guard Cavalry Rifle Division as a volunteer in January 1919 . From July 1919 to July 1920 he served in the 5th Marine Infantry Regiment of the Loewenfeld Marine Brigade . From 1920 he was in the Reichswehr ; he served in the 5th (Prussian) Infantry Regiment . From 1932 to 1935 he received general staff training . During the Second World War he was employed in various general staffs. In 1942 he was the first general staff officer (Ia) in the 68th Infantry Division . Subsequently he was chief of the General Staff of the 17th Army and from October 15, 1942 to May 1944, Chief of the General Staff of the VII Army Corps . On November 21, 1943 he was awarded the German Cross in Gold. In the last days of May of the war he was in command of the 253rd Infantry Division . The 253rd Infantry Division surrendered at Deutsch Brod near Prague . Schwatlo-Gesterding was only released from Soviet captivity in 1955 .

In 1957 he joined the Bundeswehr as a brigadier general. From 1958 to 1960 Schwatlo-Gesterding was Deputy Inspector of the Army . From October 1, 1961 to March 31, 1964, he served as Commander of the Territorial Defense Command and was then adopted into retirement.
