Hans-Werner Fritz (born November 17, 1953 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a former lieutenant general . D. of the army of the Bundeswehr . Most recently he was in command of the Bundeswehr Operations Command in Geltow near Potsdam .

Military career

Training and first uses

Fritz joined in 1973 after graduating from high school as a cadet at the service of the Bundeswehr in the Tank Battalion 314 in Oldenburg and graduated to 1975 his officer training. After successfully completing his officer training, he was made a lieutenant and assigned to the 314 tank battalion as a platoon leader , before he began studying at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg that same year .

After completing his academic training in 1978, Fritz returned to the troops as a qualified pedagogue and was again platoon leader, but this time with the 194 tank battalion in Münster . In the same year he was appointed first lieutenant . In 1981 he was transferred to Panzerbataillon 533 in Düren , took over the post of company commander and was promoted to captain .

General staff training and service as a staff officer

From 1985 to 1987 Fritz completed the 28th general staff course at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg . He was then transferred to the 2nd Panzer Grenadier Division in Kassel , where he was employed as the head of the military intelligence department ( G2 ). In 1989 he completed the one-year 24th British Army General Staff Course at Staff College in Camberley .

Back in Germany, he was employed as an operations and training staff officer (G3) at the tactical center of the army in Hanover , before he was transferred again in 1993 and took over command of the 363 tank battalion in Külsheim . The next job followed as early as 1995, this time on the Hardthöhe in Bonn as a consultant in staff department III "Military Policy" in the command staff of the armed forces (FüS III). In 1998 he returned to Great Britain, this time as a participant in the 11th Higher Command and Staff Course of the British Armed Forces at the Joint Service Command and Staff College in Bracknell. He was then trained as a military attaché and deployed as an army attaché at the German embassy in London .

From 2001 to 2003 he served in Regensburg as Chief of Staff in the Special Operations Division under the command of Hans-Otto Budde and Rainer Glatz .

General uses

In 2003 Fritz received another troop command and took over from Manfred Schlenker the post of commander of Airborne Brigade 26 “Saarland” in Saarlouis . During this employment he was also appointed brigadier general. In 2005 he handed over command of the brigade to Volker Bescht .

In 2005 he was transferred to Cologne and served in the Army Office there as Chief of Staff Wolfgang Korte and Wolf-Joachim Clauss . He handed this position over to Wolfgang Köpke on November 29, 2007 . In the following weeks it was prepared for its new use.

On January 10, 2008, Fritz finally took over command of the Special Operations Division in Regensburg from his predecessor Hans-Lothar Domröse . Associated with this was the appointment to major general. From June 20, 2010 to February 24, 2011, Fritz was Regional Commander North (RC-N) for ISAF in Mazar-e Sharif , Afghanistan , a task that he took over from Frank Leidenberger . In February 2011, Fritz handed over the post of regional commander to Markus Kneip . On October 6, 2011, he handed over command of the Special Operations Division to Jörg Vollmer . He then took over the strategy and operations department in the Federal Ministry of Defense as designated head of department.

On March 29, 2012, he was appointed Lieutenant General by the Federal Minister of Defense, Thomas de Maizière , as Head of Strategy and Operations. This department was newly formed in the course of the realignment of the Bundeswehr and the associated reorganization of the ministry. On April 23, 2013, he took over the post of commander of the Bundeswehr operations command from Rainer Glatz . On November 4, 2015, he handed over the post to Erich Pfeffer and was retired.

Others

Fritz is married and has two children.

On April 28, 2015 Fritz was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
