Wolf-Joachim Clauß (born May 14, 1950 in Buxtehude ) is a major general a. D. of the Army of the Bundeswehr and was most recently head of the Army Office .

Military career

Training and first uses

Clauß joined the German Armed Forces as an officer candidate on July 1, 1970 and was trained at the 82nd Panzer Grenadier Battalion in Lüneburg until 1972 . In April 1972 he was promoted to lieutenant and served with the Lüneburg battalion until 1976, first as platoon leader and later as intelligence officer ( S2 ). During this time he was promoted to first lieutenant in October 1974 . From 1976 to 1978 Clauß served as a youth officer in the 3rd Panzer Division in Buxtehude and was promoted to captain in October 1977 . Subsequently, he took over the 4th company of the Panzer Grenadier Battalion 162 in Wentorf near Hamburg as company commander from 1978 to 1981 .

General staff training and service as a staff officer

From 1981 to 1983 he completed the general staff course at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg . At the end of the course, he was awarded the General von Clausewitz Medal of Honor after completing an above-average annual thesis on this course. He then served for two years until 1985 as a staff officer in the operations department (G3) of the staff in the Office for Studies and Exercises of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg. During that time he was promoted to major in October 1984 . By 1986 he completed the General Staff Course at the Combined General Staff College of the US Armed Forces in Fort Leavenworth , Kansas , in the United States . Back in Germany, Clauss served as a general staff officer with the Deputy Inspector General of the Bundeswehr in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in November 1987 . In 1988 he was transferred to Koblenz and served there until 1990 as operations officer (G3) of Panzerbrigade 15 under the command of Dieter Stöckmann and Hans-Peter von Kirchbach . He was then transferred again to Wentorf near Hamburg and took command of the 162nd Panzer Grenadier Battalion until 1992.

From 1992 to 1993 he was employed again in the Federal Ministry of Defense, this time as a consultant in the planning staff (P III 9 (4)) under the direction of Vice Admiral Ulrich Weisser . In October 1993 he was promoted to colonel . From 1993 to 1996 Clauß was operations officer for land operations in the Allied Command Baltic Approaches (BALTAP) of NATO in Karup in Denmark . Afterwards, back in Bonn, from 1996 to 1999 he headed the department for central tasks in the command staff of the Army (FüH).

General uses

On July 16, 1999 he took over the Panzerlehrbrigade 9 from Wolfgang Korte in Munster and led it until 2001. During this time, in October 2000 he was appointed Brigadier General. After this troop command, he was transferred back to Bonn, where he took over the post of Head of Staff Division I in the command staff of the Army until 2003, and was therefore responsible for questions relating to personnel, training and the organization of the Army. With the appointment of major general , Clauss took over the 7th Panzer Division in Düsseldorf in October 2003 and led it until its dissolution in September 2006. In November 2006, he succeeded Wolfgang Korte as head of the Cologne Army Office , at whose head he was until his retirement on 31 December 2006 May 2012 stood.

Clauß is a member of the Presidium of the German Defense Technology Society (DWT). In addition, he was chairman of the “Freundeskreis der Panzergrenadiertruppe e. V.
