Location of the General von Steuben barracks in Bavaria

The General von Steuben Barracks was a military barracks of the Bundeswehr in Hemau . From 1966 it was the location of the rocket artillery battalion 42, which was subordinate to the artillery regiment 4 . It was closed on December 31, 2003.

Missile Artillery Battalion 42

The rocket artillery battalion 42 (RakArtBtl 42) was renamed the artillery battalion 240 in 1962. The relocation to the new barracks in Hemau took place by April 1, 1966. In 1979 the battalion was reclassified according to Army Structure 4 . On October 1, 1986, it took the artillery structure 85 . In 1991 it was equipped with the MARS rocket launcher . On July 13, 2002, the battalion's last shooting took place on the Grafenwoehr training area before it was disbanded on June 27, 2003.

The rocket artillery battalion 42 was intended for the use of nuclear weapons ("special ammunition") in the event of a defense (Germany) .

Hemau site

In addition to the barracks, there were other military installations at the Hemau site . The barracks was located northeast of the center of Hemau. The local  ammunition defeat 623/1 in the district of Langenkreith was located three kilometers to the southwest . The Hemau ( NATO ) special ammunition depot for nuclear weapons was also located there. Two and a half kilometers northwest of the barracks on the St 2660 (formerly B 8 ) was the basic network switching and switching center Bundeswehr  64 (GSVBw 64) in Rieb 5 .

Mobilization base

The barracks was also a mobilization base . The following units were stored:

  • Hunter Battalion 862
  • heavy engineer battalion 220
  • Floating Bridge Battalion 270 (1st to 4th Company)
  • Safety pull 7064

Reuse

The barracks are used today for the storage of motor vehicles, the ammunition depot is now an open-air photovoltaic system .
