Device units are a type of unit of the Bundeswehr with a low level of presence during peacetime .

Equipment units were of particular importance for the mobilization and organization of the reserve . Equipment units were particularly characteristic of the territorial army in the Cold War . The territorial army consisted mainly of equipment units, but equipment units were also planned in the field army .

In peace

Equipment units are not active units in peacetime . In times of peace, their defense material is mostly stored in depots . In peacetime equipment units either have no active staff or very little active staff. These soldiers or civilian employees were, for example, responsible for maintaining the stored material. Often had Mob - Sergeant is the only active soldier of the device unit. The mob sergeant led the reservists of the unit and prepared military exercises . However, many of the equipment units did not conduct military exercises. The beorderten reservists practiced instead with active associations or with their materiel. If the active associations for training support were firmly assigned, they were also called Coleurverband .

In the event of tension and defense

In the event of tension or defense , equipment units are mobilized . These are beordeten reservists at a mobilization base convened . Mobilization bases were often located in or near barracks or depots in the vicinity of the available disposition rooms . In the mobilization bases, personal equipment was supplemented, the defense material often stored (long-term) in or near the mobilization base was prepared for use and, if necessary, supplemented by calling up civilian material (especially trucks and construction machinery ).

Conceptually similar inactive units

  • Partially active units: These units consist to a large extent of sub-units or larger units that were planned as equipment units.
  • cadre units : These units consist mainly of sub-units or larger units that were planned as equipment units. The management staff often served in the active sub-units . The cadre consisted of the military leaders, especially parts of the corps of non-commissioned officers who were supposed to form the core of the equipment units to be mobilized.
  • Supplementary unit : inactive units without large equipment to supplement personnel
