Maximilian von Garnier (born April 16, 1971 in Berlin ) is a German American football coach and former player.

career

Von Garnier came to American football at the age of 17 in Berlin-Charlottenburg . He played for the Berlin Rebels from 1988 to 1992 . In 1992 he moved to Hamburg to join the newly founded Hamburg Blue Devils . As a wide receiver , the 1.90 meter tall player was one of the main characters of the most successful time of the team from the Hanseatic city, which sometimes posted five-digit attendance figures at their home games in the Volksparkstadion . Garnier, who was nicknamed "Mega Max", was described as a "cult figure", "monument", "veteran", "icon", "dinosaur" and "unofficial mascot" of the Blue Devils. In 1995 he accepted an offer from Rhein Fire from Düsseldorf , played in the NFL Europe , but remained a supplementary player there before returning to the Hamburg Blue Devils.

He was German champion with Hamburg in 1996, 2001, 2002 and 2003 and won the Eurobowl with the team in 1996, 1997 and 1998 . With the German national team, which Garnier was part of between 1997 and 2007, he became European champion in 2001, won gold at the World Games in Duisburg in 2005 and took third place at the 2007 World Cup. In 2008 he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf .

Even when he was playing, von Garnier became involved with the Blue Devils as a youth coach and led the Hamburg offspring to win the German youth championship in 1999, among other things. He looked after the German junior national team, which became European champion in 2008 under his leadership. In 2008 he succeeded Joe Roman as head coach of the Blue Devils in the top German division, the GFL . After the temporary withdrawal to the third division, the Hamburg team rose again to the GFL in 2011 under his leadership. Von Garnier remained the team's coach until 2014. Furthermore, from July 2010, he became involved in the association's work as vice president. From 2009, von Garnier was part of the German men's national team's coaching staff, where he looked after the players on the wide receiver position. In 2012 he was a member of the coaching staff of a youth world selection that competed against the US national team. "After more than 22 years of American football, this nomination is definitely the highlight of my career," said von Garnier.

From August 2018 he worked as an expert on the television program "Kickoff - Das GFL-Football-Magazin" on Sport1 .
