Joe Roman

Joe Roman (* 26. September 1942 in Chicago ) is an American American football trainer.

career

Roman, son of a wrestler coach, studied physical education at Moorhead State University from 1965 to 1969. In 1969 and 1970 he was a member of the coaching staff of the football team at South Moorhead Junior High School ( Minnesota ), in 1970 and 1971 he was an assistant coach at Wayne State University , where he looked after the linebackers .

Roman, who worked full-time as a teacher and football coach at Lake Park High School (State of Illinois ) between 1971 and 1998 , was also the defensive coordinator for the college team of the College of DuPage from 1975 and worked for the team until 1996. Between 1993 and 1995 he was involved in leading DuPage to a streak of 36 straight wins.

In 1998 and 1999 he was a member of the coaching staff at Mesa Community College in Arizona , where he was responsible for the linebackers.

From the 2000 season onwards, Roman worked as a defensive coordinator for the Hannover Musketeers in Germany . From 2000 to 2003 he returned to the United States after the end of the season in Hanover and was a member of the coaching staff at Joliet Junior College in Illinois. In 2002, he and Joliet won the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) championship title and was named Defensive Coordinator of the Year in the NJCAA by American Football Monthly Magazine in the same year.

In the 2004 season, the American worked as a defensive coordinator for the Danube Dragons in the Austrian AFL . In the 2005 season he moved as head coach to the Hamburg Blue Devils in the top German division GFL . In September 2005 he led Hamburg to the GFL final, the German Bowl , but lost there with his team against Braunschweig with 28:31. At the end of September 2008, he resigned from his position as Hamburg head coach after the Teufel had previously missed the GFL championship round for the first time in eight years.

For the 2009 season he became head coach of the Hohenems Blue Devils in Austria. In 2010 and 2011 Roman worked as the head coach of the Marburg Mercenaries in the GFL and led the Hessians to the semi-finals of the German championship twice. In 2012 he switched to the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes as defensive coordinator , with whom he became German runner-up in his first year in office. After three years in Kiel, Roman signed on as head coach at the Hildesheim Invaders in 2015 and led the team to promotion to the GFL in the first year. He worked in Hildesheim until the end of August 2017.

For the 2018 season, Roman switched to the Saarland Hurricanes ( GFL 2 ) as Defense Coordinator and then took care of the defense of the Elmshorn Fighting Pirates . With Elmshorn he won the championship title in the northern season of the GFL2 in 2019, and for the 2020 season he joined the coaching staff of the second division Rostock Griffins to also take care of the defense there.

In 2016 Roman was inducted into the NJCAA Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in his home country. Roman has published a book and several videos on American football tactics.
