Blue River Bowl III: AFL regular match against Raiffeisen Vikings Vienna (28-3) in the Rattenfängerstadion (2010)

The Danube Dragons are an Austrian American football team from Vienna . You are currently playing in the Austrian Football League , the top division in Austria. The team is currently playing at the Donaufeld stadium in Vienna.

The team was founded in 1985 under the name Klosterneuburg Mercenaries . The Mercenaries were one of the first American football clubs in Austria and the first such club in Lower Austria. The club colors are green and white.

They can boast a number of successes: six national championship titles, two vice state championship titles in the Austrian Football League (1990 and 1997) and one national championship title (2010) as well as victory in the Danube Cup, an international tournament in Ulm , Germany .

Combat team

After a build-up year during the 2006 season in the 1st division (second division in Austria), they returned to the AFL in 2007 as a surprise team . After all, they were able to end the season with a 4-4 balance and take 4th place in the table.

In the 2008 season they failed in the play-offs at the later Austrian Bowl XXIV winner Graz Giants , a year later the Danube Dragons were again thrown out of the play-offs by the Giants. The first two editions of the newly introduced Blue River Bowl could both be won.

In 2010 both matches with the Raiffeisen Vikings Vienna were won again in the regular season. After a strong season with a 5–1 record, the Vikings Vienna were thrown out of the competition with 31:24 in the play-offs . This great season was crowned with the 28:21 victory in the Austrian Bowl XXVI against the Swarco Raiders Tirol in Innsbruck.

In 2011 and 2012 you could reach the play-offs, but failed there once against the Raiders from Tyrol and once against the Vikings from Vienna.

In 2013 they were able to qualify again for the play-offs with a score of 4-6, but could not win over the entire season against any team that made it into the semi-finals. This season the Blue River Bowl also went to Raiffeisen Vikings Vienna . As a result, the Danube Dragons were 4: 7 behind in the statistics.

They also regularly make national team players and have a former player, David Nader, in the NCAA (North American College Football League ).

Over the past few years, the Danube Dragons have established themselves as a top team in Austria, reaching the play-offs of the first division almost every year. In addition, they work with young people in four age groups: starting with the micros (U10), then minis (U13), schoolchildren (U15) and youth (U17).

In the 2006 season, the Dragons junior classes won three gold and one silver.

In the 2010 season, the Minis age group (then still U12) won the championship.

In 2013 the junior team was disbanded. Instead, the future team was launched.
