The Prague Black Panthers are a Czech American football team from Prague , founded in 1991 as the Prague Panthers. Since their merger with the Prague Black Hawks in 2012, they have had their current name.

history

In January 1991 the first American football team, the Prague Lions, was founded in the Czech Republic. After internal disagreements, two new teams, the Prague Panthers and the Prague Cocks, were formed after just a few months. In 1992 the two teams merged and adopted the name Prague Panthers.

In 1994 the Panthers went down in history as the first Czech champions . The Panthers also won the two subsequent championships. Between 1999 and 2003 the Panthers celebrated five national championships in a row. Except for the 2006 season, the Panthers were in every final for the Czech championship. From 2007 to 2010 they were able to secure the title again.

In the 2009 season, the Panthers also became the first team from the former Eastern Bloc to win a European competition , the EFAF Cup , after failing in the semifinals in 2008 against the Berlin Eagles . From the 2010 season, the Panthers played simultaneously in the Austrian league, the Austrian Football League , and in the Czech ČLAF.

At the end of 2012, the Prague Panthers merged as the reigning Czech runner-up with the reigning champion Prague Black Hawks under the new name Prague Black Panthers. Since then, they have won the national championship every year. The Black Panthers ended their guest appearance in the Austrian Football League after the 2016 season, in which they finished eighth and last. Instead of relegation to the second class, they withdrew completely from the Austrian league system. The Black Panthers are returning to the AFL for the 2019 season.
