The Austrian Football League 2010 is the 26th season of the top Austrian men's American football division . It began on March 27, 2010 with the game of the Prague Panthers against the Turek Graz Giants (28:42) and ended on July 9, 2010 with the 28:21 victory of the Danube Dragons against the Swarco Raiders Tirol in the Austrian Bowl XXVI at Tivoli-Neu in Innsbruck . It was the first national title in the 25-year history of the Danube Dragons.
Compared to the AFL of the 25th season there were some serious structural changes. Above all, the increase in the league from four to eight teams and the discontinuation of the interdivision, which only existed in 2009, are the most obvious. In addition to the climbers Carinthian Black Lions (Inter Division), Salzburg Bulls (Division I) and Generali Invaders (Division I) from St. Pölten , is the receipt of Prague Panthers, the Czech champions and EFAF Cup winner of 2009 , remarkable. The descent of the Cineplexx Blue Devils from Hohenems to Division I should also be mentioned.
Due to the European Championship taking place in Germany , the basic round is played in a slightly abbreviated mode. Each team will play three home games in the six game weeks. The best four teams of the regular season take part in the playoffs, with the first two having home rights. Its winners play in the Austrian Bowl for the Austrian title.
Also noteworthy is the import class of the 2010 season, which is considered to be the strongest so far. With Marquay Love (Swarco Raiders Tirol) , formerly with the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints , George Cooper (Turek Graz Giants) , formerly with the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons , and Germaine Race (Generali Invaders St. Pölten) , formerly San Diego Chargers , three former NFL professionals are under contract with AFL teams. In general, the four to two rule applies to import players, i.e. four legionnaires in the squad on the match day and two at the same time on the field. Exceptions are games against the two promoted Salzburg Bulls and Generali Invaders, here the two to two rule applies.
