The Salzburg Bulls are an Austrian American football team from the state capital Salzburg and currently (2018) play in Division I, the second highest division in Austria.

history

The American football team was founded in autumn 1982 under the name Salzburg Lions. In 1990 the merger with the Hallein Diggers from the district capital Hallein took place to form the new team Salzburg Bulls. The club colors are red and white . Due to the long-term close cooperation with the ASKÖ sports association, the Bulls train on the newly built ASKÖ sports facility in the Gnigl district , where all championship games have been taking place since then.

Right from the start, Salzburg was one of the football strongholds in Austria, alongside Vienna and Graz , which today represent top European teams with the Vikings and Giants . In 1984 the Salzburg Lions won the first national championship title in the club's history in the Austrian Bowl, which was held for the first time. The final game against the Graz Giants , which took place in Salzburg on October 20, 1984, was won by the Lions, reinforced with US legionnaires, with a clear 27:10. Two years later, the Lions in the game for the Austrian Bowl against Graz, who dominated the championship in the 1980s and together with the Vikings also in the 1990s, had to accept a 20-0 defeat in the final. In 1989 the Lions defeated Graz in their third final game in Salzburg with a clear 34-0 and celebrated the second and so far last Austrian championship title. After these brilliant first years things went downhill for the Salzburgers. In 1993 it was enough for the runner-up title (10:45 against Feldkirch Oscar Dinos ), followed by four years of second class.

In 1997 the Bulls won Division I and from then on played again in the Austrian Football League until 2002 . However, they could no longer follow up on the successes of the first years. Although the Bulls won the Silver Bowl in 2003, the club officials decided to voluntarily stay in the second division because of their own financial reasons to keep up with the teams from the AFL, which thanks to financially strong sponsors could also afford expensive professional players Situation was no longer possible. Since then, games in Salzburg have only been played with amateurs who even have to finance their own equipment. The team proved that this is amateur sport at the highest level when they reached the finals for the Silver Bowl from 2003 to 2006. If the Bulls were able to conquer the Silver Bowl in 2003, the team then had to face the second team the Vikings give up.

Situation in 2010

The Salzburg Bulls attach great importance to their youth work. Half of the current fighting team is made up of its own young players, and this year the club is competing with three young teams for the first time and taking part in school, youth and junior championships. In Division I, the team did not suffer any defeat in the regular season of the current season in 2009 and was the favorite to win the Silver Bowl , the championship final of Division I. However, in the final, the team was defeated by the Generali Invaders St. Pölten just 26:27 . Since 2010 the Bulls have been playing in the top domestic division of the AFL due to a league reform.

Based on the team's performance potential, the audience response that has been increasing for years and the fruitful youth work, chairman Alexander Narobe has set himself the goal of getting back into the AFL with a financially strong sponsor and has achieved this for the 2010 game year. A financially strong sponsor is still being sought. Contrary to popular belief, there is no connection to the well-known energy drink manufacturer Red Bull .

Situation in 2012

With the 2012 season, the Bulls start their 30th year of existence, and they will find themselves in Division I again. After two difficult years in the Austrian Football League (AFL), the top domestic division, the Salzburg Bulls will be competing in 2012 with a young team in Division I, the second division. The fighting team has been drastically rejuvenated, and there have also been some changes in the coaching staff.
