The Austrian Football Division One (Division 1) is the second highest division in American football in Austria and is held under the responsibility of the American Football Association Austria (AFBÖ). Division I is played on an amateur basis . There is no automatic rule of promotion to the Austrian Football League , as this is mostly based on the financial possibilities of the individual teams. The last of the regular season plays with the Division II champion , the winner of the Iron Bowl, in a relegation game for relegation.

Game mode

Division I is the second highest division in American football in Austria. The ten teams are divided into two conferences. Each team plays a home and an away game against each other from its conference in the regular season. Then the best team of a conference with home rights plays against the second-placed team of the other conference in the playoffs for a place in the Silverbowl.

history

Division I was held for the first time in 1984, and a season has been played every year since 1987. Since 1998 the final of Division I has been referred to as the Silver Bowl, with the Fischamend Oilers winning the first bowl in a win against the St. Pölten Invaders (27-6).

Since then, the league has been restructured several times, most recently after the 2008 season when, with the introduction of the AFL's interdivision in 2009, each team played a home and an away game against a team in this intermediate league.

In 2009, each team in Division I was only allowed to have three professionals or semi-professionals and only two Class A legionnaires in the roster, but they can both play on the field at the same time.

Between 2006 and 2008 the Hungarian team of the Budapest Wolves from Budapest , which had been promoted from Division II, also took part.

The second team of the Raiffeisen Vikings Vienna , which had always won the Silver Bowl since 2004, also no longer took part in this league from 2008.
