The Amstetten Thunder are an Austrian American football club from the Lower Austrian district capital Amstetten . You are currently playing in the Austrian Football Division One .

history

The team was founded in 1990 as Amstetten Thunderbolts . The club colors are blue and white . Home of the team is the Umdasch Stadium in Amstetten, also referred to by the club as the Umdasch Dome . 1991 followed the entry into the AFBÖ . In the following two seasons all games are lost. In the following years, the team entered very successful syndicates with the St. Pölten Invaders and the Salzburg Bulls . During this time, the youth teams won several championship and runner-up titles. In 1997 the team was able to reach the final of the Austrian Football Division One on its own, but had to admit defeat there.

2001 succeeded again the move into the Silver Bowl IV, but there the Feldkirchen Falcons were too strong. In the following two years, the division 1 playoff was over. Nevertheless, the Silver Bowls were held in Amstetten during these years, which resulted in a large audience. From the 2005 season the Thunderbolts will play in the Austrian Football Division Two . The club name is changed to Amstetten Thunder in 2006 . In the following years there was no success. In 2009 and 2010 the team qualified for the Challenge Bowl and won it 61-0 in the second attempt. Thus the first title win finally succeeds in the fourth final.

In the coming years, new coaches from the USA and Canada will be hired, who mostly bring the team to the playoffs. It wasn't until 2015 that Gerry Woodruff managed to return to the Iron Bowl. There you have to admit defeat to the Budapest Wolves , but participation in the finals is synonymous with promotion to Austrian Football Division One . As early as next year, the team made it to the playoff as a promoted team. In 2017, the Thunder can even win all 8 games of the regular season, but then lose unluckily in the playoff. In the fourth season under Woodruff, the team wins 7 of 8 games in the regular season and can also decide the playoff for themselves. In the Silverbowl XXI, the Thunder win 17:13 against the Vienna Knights and are promoted to the Austrian Football League , the top division.

The AFL season unfortunately ended with 10 lost games and thus the last place in the table. Nevertheless, it was a very instructive season for the Amstetten Thunder. The fight was always going to the bitter end and the motivation in the team could be kept up until the end. A second team was also set up to make it easier for newcomers to get started in the sport.
