Claus Seitz

Claus J. Seitz (born June 4, 1936 in Darmstadt ; † July 7, 2003 in Munich ) was a German book graphic artist and book manufacturer .

Life

After an apprenticeship as an art bookbinder, Seitz studied seven semesters at the Werkkunstschule in Offenbach am Main , including in Gottlieb Ruth's class for commercial graphics . From 1959 he worked as a manufacturer for Carl Hanser Verlag in Munich, from 1960 as production manager. There he designed the covers for works by Friedrich Georg Jünger , Heiner Bastian and Erich Fried . His books have been voted one of the "50 most beautiful books of the year" several times. In 1974 he became production manager at Rogner & Bernhard Verlag. In 1977 he founded the Matthes & Seitz publishing house in Munich together with the editor Axel Matthes . In 1983 he left the publishing house and returned to Hanser. There he designed editions of works by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Elias Canetti as well as books by Günter Kunert and WG Sebald . In 2003 he died in Munich after a long illness.
