Metro Cammell

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Metro-Cammel , also known as the Metropolitan Cammell Carriage and Wagon Company (MCCW), was an English manufacturer of railway wagons and locomotives based in Satlex and later in Washwood Heath in Birmingham . The company was bought by GEC Alsthom in May 1989 and production ended in 2005.

The company produced numerous vehicles for important projects, such as the trains for the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway, the East Railway Line and for the Eurotunnel . Most of the London Underground's vehicles that were produced around 1950 can also be attributed to Metro-Cammel.

history

In 1863 the "Metropolitan Railway Carriage and Wagon Company Ltd of London" was founded. Joseph Wright initially produced the vehicles in London, but then moved production to Birmingham.

In 1902 the companies Ashbury Railway Carriage and Iron Co Ltd merged with Riche , Brown , Marshalls and Co. Ltd. , Lancaster Railway Carriage and Wagon Co Ltd and Oldbury Railway Carriage and Wagon Co Ltd and became the Metropolitan Amalgamated Railway Carriage and Wagon Company Ltd .

In 1929, the rail vehicle construction of the Cammell Laird and Company, which specializes in ships , was outsourced as the Metropolitan-Cammell Carriage and Wagon Company Ltd , MCCW for short.

The newly established company was commissioned during the First World War to manufacture tanks for the British Army. So she produced all 1100 of the highly developed Mark V tanks .

In 1932 the Metro Cammell Weymann was founded in order to outsource the bus production that had been built up until then.

The MCCW was also active in tank construction during World War II .

The closure by Alstom

In May 1989 the company was sold to GEC Alstom . The last vehicles, Class 290 " Pendolino ", were manufactured in 2005 for the modernization of the West Coast Main Line . The factories in Birmingham were then closed.
