The London Underground 1995 Tube Stock (or just 95 Tube Stock for short) is a series of electric railcars that are used on the London Northern Line . Contrary to the usual London Underground convention, the name is not derived from the year of the planned commissioning (1996), but the different name avoids confusion with the 1996 Tube Stock , which was previously ordered and was also to be commissioned in 1996 and on the Jubilee Line is used.

history

The series was ordered to replace the 1959 Tube Stock and 1972 Mk. I Tube Stock trains previously used on the Northern Line and was built by Alstom in Birmingham . The vehicles are leased for a period of 25 years and during this period they will be serviced by an Alstom subsidiary and made available for daily operation. The first train was put into service on June 12, 1998, and the last vehicle has been in service since April 10, 2001.

Train formation and details

An implementation of the 1995 Tube Stock consists of two half-trains, each consisting of a railcar with a driving motor car (DM) , a non-powered intermediate trailer car (T) and a railcar with an uncoupling non-driving motor car (UNDM) . The auxiliary driver's cab is provided with the shunting drive switch in order to simplify maneuvering in the depots. However, use in passenger service is only permitted and possible with complete six-car trains.

In their outward appearance, the vehicles are very similar to the 1996 Tube Stock trains that were ordered shortly beforehand and were also built by Alstom; the car bodies are identical except for a few details. The 1996 Tube Stock built for the Jubilee Line was originally intended to be used together with older trains of the 1983 Tube Stock type, so, in contrast to the somewhat older 1992 Tube Stock , both series have relatively flat windows so that the vehicles can use the 1983 Tube Stock see more similar. Despite their external similarity, the two series differ in terms of interior design and technical equipment. The younger 1995 Tube Stock IGBTs instead of GTO thyristors to convert direct current into three-phase current for the traction motors.

Together with the 1996 Tube Stock, the 1995 Tube Stock is the first series to be equipped with protective bars between the individual trolleys from the start. This protection against falls between the individual wagons first had to be retrofitted on older series.

commitment

The 1995 Tube Stock is used exclusively on the Northern Line. Use on other underground routes is not permitted due to the risk of interference with signal systems.
