The London Underground 1996 Tube Stock (or just 96 Tube Stock for short) is a series of electric railcars that are used on the London Jubilee Line . In accordance with the usual conventions at London Underground , the name is derived from the planned year of commissioning (1996). It should be noted, however, that the 1996 Tube Stock was ordered before the somewhat more modern 1995 Tube Stock and was also delivered a little earlier.
history
The series was originally ordered to reinforce the 1983 Tube Stock fleet previously used on the Jubilee Line for the upcoming Jubilee Line Extension . For this purpose, the older vehicles of the 1983 Tube Stock should be modernized. Since this turned out to be too costly, it was decided to equip the Jubilee Line completely with new vehicles, so that 59 6-car trains were ordered, which completely replaced the 1983 tube stock. The first of 59 trains went into service on December 24, 1997, the last on July 31, 2001.
In 2005, the 59 trains used so far were expanded by one car, making them 7-car trains, and another four completely new 7-car trains were ordered, so that today 63 trains are available for operation on the Jubilee Line . All vehicles were built by Alstom in Birmingham .
Train formation and details
The 1996 Tube Stock originally consisted of half trains, each consisting of a Driving Motor Car (DM) , Trailer Car (T) and an uncoupling Non-Driving Motor Car (UNDM) . A driving motor car is equipped with a driver's cab and drive motors, while an uncoupling non-driving motor car also has drive motors, but not a full-fledged driver's cab, just a shunting drive switch to enable maneuvering in the depots. In 2005 half of the half-trains were extended by an additional trailer car , so that there are now 7-car trains with the formation DM-T-UNDM-UNDM-TT-DM. The expansion by the additional car was planned from the beginning and therefore prepared, so the necessary drive power was available from the start and only had to be activated by updated software. Use in passenger service is only possible and permitted as a 7-car train, among other things because the trains would otherwise not fit on the platform screen doors of the tunnel stations at the Jubilee Line Extension .
The 1996 Tube Stock was originally intended to be used in conjunction with older 1983 Tube Stock trains, which is why the 1996 Tube Stock, in contrast to the slightly older 1992 Tube Stock, had relatively low windows so that the vehicles looked more like the 1983 Tube Stock. In their outward appearance, the vehicles are very similar to the somewhat younger trains of the 1995 Tube Stock, also built by Alstom, the car bodies are identical except for a few details, but trains of the 1996 Tube Stock with an additional car are longer than the 1995 ones Tube Stock with its six cars. Despite their external similarity, the two series differ in terms of interior design and technical equipment, for example the younger 1995 Tube Stock uses IGBTs instead of GTO thyristors to convert the direct current into three-phase current for the traction motors, and the 1996 Tube Stock also uses light bulbs for headlights and taillights , while lamps with LED technology are already being used in the 1995 Tube Stock. The reason for these differences is the fact that the 1996 Tube Stock design was frozen back in 1991. The trains and wagons newly acquired in 2005 for the extension differ in some details from the vehicles in the original delivery, for example they have a black floor instead of a gray and amber LED display instead of red.
Together with the 1995 Tube Stock, the 1996 Tube Stock is the first series to be equipped with locks between the individual cars from the start. This protection against falls between the individual wagons first had to be retrofitted on older series.
commitment
The 1996 Tube Stock is used exclusively on the Jubilee Line. Use on other underground routes is not permitted due to the risk of interference with signal systems.
