Seniors
The first European Championship in 1983 took place without qualification. All five participating nations competed against each other in a tournament and played a ranking list.
From 1985 to 2001 a final tournament was held, which consisted of the semi-finals, a final and usually a game for third place. The tournament was preceded by a qualification that had no fixed mode. In 1985 and 1993 there was no qualification because only four teams competed. With ten national teams, the 1991 European Championship had the largest field of participants to date.
Since 2003, the European American Football Championship has been held in three consecutive tournaments, which correspond to different levels of performance. The respective winner of the first two tournaments qualifies for the following higher class tournament. The European champion will be determined in the last tournament. The last-placed teams of the two higher-class tournaments start one class lower in the next tournament series. This mode is similar to a normal league system with the difference that every team that competes in the tournament series can win the title at the end of the series. In the years 2007 to 2010, the Austrian national team took part in all three tournaments, as it was able to complete the first two tournaments as winners.
Juniors
The junior tournament has been held at different intervals since 1992. The delivery mode also changes. Twelve national associations are currently taking part in the competition. In the final tournament 2015, four teams compete against each other. In an upstream qualification, only two participants are determined for the final tournament. Germany as the host and Austria as the defending champion are already qualified.
