American Football European Championship 2021

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2021 European American Football Championship is the 15th edition of this tournament. The qualification was played out in 2019. The semi-finals were originally supposed to take place in August and the final in October 2020, but this has been postponed for one year to August and October 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

In a qualifying round three teams competed against each other in four groups. The group winners then play the European champions. The second and third place winners also compete against each other and thus play out places 5 to 12. A B-EM will take place parallel to the European Championship, but - in contrast to previous years - the participants cannot qualify for the actual EM and thus cannot fight for the continental title.

Qualification phase

Division A

The reigning European champions France faced Serbia and the Czech Republic in their qualifying group. In the opening game against the outsider Czech Republic, the top favorite France found it surprisingly difficult. The French only managed one touchdown at half time. After the break, the Czechs were even able to shorten it to 3: 7. Only in the final section did the defending champion live up to his role as a favorite and ultimately won clearly. In the second game, Serbia celebrated an undisputed home win, so that on the last day of the game the expected final between Serbia and France came. There France was able to prevail in a defensively dominated game in the last quarter with 14: 7. Both touchdowns on the part of the defending champion were achieved by the defensive.

Division B

In Division B, the highest seeded team, Austria, surprisingly failed to prevail. The reigning European runner-up won the opening game in Switzerland. In the home game against Italy, Team Austria led 14-3 in the third quarter, but missed three field goals during the game. With two touchdowns in the last quarter, the Italians turned the game around and beat the favorites. In the final game against Switzerland, Italy celebrated an undisputed 38-0 victory and qualified for the final round of the European Championship.
