The Austrian national American football team is the Austrian national team for American football . It is organized by the American Football Association Austria (AFBÖ) and has existed in its current form since 2006.
history
The first establishment of the men's national team can be traced back to 1982. The national team at that time was able to show 5th place in 1983 and 3rd place in 1995 as the greatest success at the American Football European Championship .
In 2001 the AFBÖ put its focus on the junior national team and thus dissolved the men's national team.
The re-establishment followed in 2006. Therefore, the re-entry had to be started from the bottom. Head Coach Bernhard Binstorfer, who led the team up to the first success at the C-European Championship in 2007 . In 2009 the office was taken over by the American Rick Rhoades, the head coach of the Graz Giants .
In 2009, they won another title at the B-European Championship in Wolfsberg , with which the team qualified for the A-European Championship 2010 in Germany . There the athletic qualification, ie a place among the first three nations, for the home world championship 2011 should take place and thus the goal of the so-called "Mission 2011" should be achieved.
In May 2010, Team Austria won the Charity Bowl XII, organized by Raiffeisen Vikings Vienna , against the US Division III College Augustana, Illinois , with 10-3 and was the first purely European team to beat an American in the Win history. It was the only preparation game for the European Championship in July of the same year. In order to ensure ideal preparation for the national team for the same and for the 2011 World Cup, the AFBÖ shortened the first Austrian league in 2010 and 2011 to only six straight through games and also blocked promotion and relegation for both years.
The last Austrian defeat was the 17-21 of 2006 against the then European champions Sweden up to the American Football World Cup 2011. At this same World Cup Austria occupied after three preliminary round defeats against Japan , Canada and France and a win against Australia in the game Seventh place finished seventh.
