Career highlights and awards

Christoph Gross (born June 1, 1988 in Oberpullendorf ) is a former Austrian American football player . He played on the position of quarterback for the Vienna Vikings .

Career

Christoph Gross began his football career in 2004 with the Newtown Dolphins (then Mattersburg Dolphins ), driven by his four-year-old brother, who also plays football. The newly founded Dolphins did not have a junior team, which is why Gross played for the youth of the Baden Bruins. There he was able to compete for the first time with the junior teams of the major Austrian clubs and played against the Vienna Vikings and the Danube Dragons , among others . After the Dolphins dissolved, Gross stayed with the Bruins. In 2005 he was invited to the training camp of the junior national team for the first time, where he was initially used as a wide receiver due to poor performance . He also drove with the team to the 2006 European Junior Championship, where he acted as a backup throughout the competition.

In the 2006/2007 season, Christoph Gross moved to the Vienna Vikings. There he played alternately with the juniors and the second team as backup quarterback for Philipp Jobstmann. With Team II he won the Silverbowl with a win against the St. Pölten Invaders . The following year, Gross was starting quarterback of the reserve and was briefly allowed to sniff the first team before he began his military service .

In 2009 the Vikings decided with Jobstmann and Gross for two Austrian quarterbacks, whereby Jobstmann was promoted to starter quarterback for the time being. Gross caused a sensation in the postseason when he came on the field in the semifinals against the Swarco Raiders Tirol as well as in the final of the Austrian Bowl against the Graz Giants and led his team to victory both times.

He has been a starter in the quarterback position since 2010 and has also fought for a place in the Austrian national team with his achievements. With this, Gross took part, among other things, in the American Football World Cup in 2011 , where however only seventh place could be achieved. With the Vikings he was back in the final of the Austrian Bowl, which was lost to the Raiders.

The following year, however, Gross succeeded again with the Vikings in bringing the Austrian Bowl to Vienna with a win against the Raiders. In addition, they competed in the Eurobowl XXVI against the Swiss team Calanda Broncos , where they had to admit defeat with 14:27. After the season, Gross was elected the Offensive MVP of the Austrian Football League and the Austrian Bowl MVP. The quarterback also celebrated a successful season in 2013, winning the Austrian Bowl for the second time in a row with the Vikings and winning the Eurobowl XXVII with a 37:14 against the Swarco Raiders Tirol .

In addition to his playing career, Gross coaches the quarterbacks of the junior national team, which won the European junior championship again in 2013.

In the summer of 2014, Christoph Gross ended his football career.
