The Calanda Broncos are an American football club that was founded in 1991 under the name Landquart Broncos Graubünden .

history

The Broncos celebrated their first success in 2003 when they qualified for the play-offs with a 5-4 season record: There they defeated the Zurich Renegades, who had previously been unbeaten and number 1, thanks to a blocked field goal attempt shortly before It ended with 29:28 and then in the final the number 2 seeded Basel Gladiators thanks to their own field goal with 24:22 at the end of the game. The following year, the Broncos competed in the European Football League , the highest club competition in Europe at the time, but were defeated in the group stage by Flash de la Courneuve and the Badalona Dracs. In 2004, the Broncos made it to twelfth place in the European EFAF ranking.

In 2007, the Broncos caused a sensation again when they competed as the first European club against two US college teams (against the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and John Carroll University) within three days. This year, the Broncos rose again thanks to a 7: 6 final victory against Geneva in the top Swiss division.

For the 2008 season, the Bündner hired a new head coach, James Craig from Peru State College, and Aaron James, who reached the final in France's highest league in 2007 with the Thonon Black Panthers, was hired as the new quarterback . The Broncos qualified as the first team in 20 years to qualify directly for the Swiss Bowl , leaving opponents such as Master Bern Grizzlies and runner-up Winterthur Warriors and Basel Gladiators - both of whom were defeated in the first and second leg - behind. In the end, however, they were clearly defeated by the record champions in the Swiss Bowl with 27:52.

At the general meeting in late 2008, members voted to rename the team the Calanda Broncos.

On July 25, 2009, the Broncos managed to win their second Swiss Bowl after 2003. They prevailed against defending champion Zurich Renegades with 35:23. Before that, the Broncos won the qualification for the first time in the club's history, as did the U19 junior team. In the EFAF Cup, the Bündner retired after defeats in the group stage against Thonon and Parma.

On July 17, 2010, the Broncos became the first Swiss American football team to win the EFAF Cup. In the final they defeated the favored Swedish team Carlstad Crusaders 17: 3. The Graubünden team then defended their Swiss championship title and ended the year with 16 victories without defeat with a white vest that is unique in Europe.

In 2011, the Broncos remained undefeated in the Swiss championship and became the first Swiss team to claim their third title in a row. The only defeat for the Graubünden team was the Eurobowl quarter-finals when they lost 12:15 to the record winner Vienna Vikings. This was also the first and only defeat of the Broncos in their last 35 games, which earned the Swiss champions fifth place in the official ranking of the European Football Association - a record for a Swiss club.

On July 21, 2012, the Calanda Broncos, headed by head coach Geoff Buffum, won the Eurobowl XXVI with a 27:14 success over the Vienna Vikings in Vaduz . In addition, they were again Swiss champions in 2012. After Buffum moved to Norway, Cam Olson took over as coach. In 2013, he defended his title in the Swiss championship under his leadership. In 2014, the team was initially looked after by head coach Adam Rita, in mid-May 2014 there was a separation, subsequently the players Cedric Townsend and Stacey Thomas exercised the coaching activities. The final of the Swiss championship was reached again, but lost.

For the 2015 season, Buffum returned as head coach. He led the team to the championship in 2015, runners-up in 2016, before winning the title again in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
