André Mathes

André Mathes (born February 5, 1975 in Mainz ) is a German national American football player . His greatest successes are winning the European Championship with the German national American football team in 2001 and 2010 and winning the World Bowl twice . He also won the Eurobowl and was German and Swiss champion several times.

Life

André Mathes was born on February 5, 1975 in the family of a locksmith . As a result, Mathes grew up in Guntersblum in Rheinhessen . After attending primary school , he finally switched to a secondary school . During this time Mathes was already doing a lot of sport at the gymnastics club 1848 Guntersblum. After training in the family's own locksmith's shop, he switched to the Mainz Golden Eagles as an offensive liner at the age of 20 for the 1994/1995 season . There he first played in the regional league. In 1999 the 1.96 meter tall and 140 kg heavy player won the World Bowl for the first time with the Frankfurt Galaxy . In the same year he made his debut with the Hamburg Blue Devils in the German Football League . He reached the final of the German championship with Hamburg, but had to admit defeat to the Braunschweig Lions there. He then played for two years with the Düsseldorf Panthers , followed by the Rüsselsheim Razorbacks station . In spring 2004 he won the World Bowl with Berlin Thunder in NFL Europe. In the subsequent GFL seasons in 2004 and 2005 he was in the service of the Braunschweig Lions. After becoming German runner-up in his first year in Braunschweig, he won the title with Lower Saxony in 2005. In the run-up to the 2006 season, he went to the Marburg Mercenaries and was German runner-up in his first year with the Hessen team. On May 28, 2008 he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by the then Federal Minister of the Interior, Wolfgang Schäuble , the highest award for athletes in Germany. In spring 2009 he moved from Marburg to the Berlin Adlers . In the 2009 season he won the final of the German championship with Berlin. In 2010 he moved into the final with the capital city, but lost there against Kiel. Nevertheless, he won the Eurobowl with Berlin this season .

From 2011 Mathes, who played hockey in his home town of Guntersblum in his free time , was under contract with the Calanda Broncos in Switzerland . With the team from the canton of Graubünden he became the crowd's favorite and won the championship seven times with the team and the Eurobowl in 2012. In July 2019, at the age of 44, he moved to Frankfurt Universe in the GFL.

National team

In 1998 he made his debut in the German national team. In 2000 he was runner-up in the European Championship and in 2001 European Champion. In 2003 he won the bronze medal at the 2nd IFAF American Football World Championships with the selection . In addition, Mathes won first place with the national team at the 2005 World Games in Duisburg . At the 2007 World Cup he won bronze again. In 2010 he became European champion with Germany.
