The Thonon Black Panthers are an American football team based in Thonon-les-Bains that plays in the French premier league. The team was founded in 1987 and currently plays in the top French league.

history

The team was founded in 1987 by Benoit Sirouet and Jérôme Garnier. Due to a significant increase in the second division, the Black Panthers were represented for the first time in the second highest division in 1991. For the 1998 season, the Black Panthers, again due to a league expansion, competed in the highest national division and immediately reached the quarter-finals of the play-offs for the Casque de Diamant . In the following two years, 1999 and 2000, Thonon made it to the semi-finals, where the team failed both times on the eventual title winner. With these to date greatest successes in the club's history, the continuous rise of the Black Panthers ended. The 2002 season ended with relegation from the French House of Lords.

In 2004, the promotion to the first division landed with the first win of the Casque d'Or , the then championship title of the second division. In the years 2007 to 2010, the Black Panthers moved four times in a row as the winner of their group in the semi-finals of the state championship. In the 2007 season and the 2009 season they even reached the finals, in which they were clearly defeated by Flash de La Courneuve . The third national runner-up came in 2012 as the best team of the regular season. In the Casque de Diamant there was a narrow defeat against the Spartiates d'Amiens .

In the 2013 season, the Black Panthers won the French championship for the first time. They were able to repeat this success in the 2014 season.

Internationally, the Black Panthers competed in the European Football League in 2008 , where they were the last to be eliminated from their preliminary group. In the 2009 season the team took part in the second-rate EFAF Cup and only failed in the final at the Prague Panthers with 35:12. After another appearance in 2011, which ended in the semi-finals, Thonon won the EFAF Cup 2013 on the third attempt . The final opponent was the Spanish team L'Hospitalet Pioners , which was clearly defeated with 66: 6.

In the 2014 season, the Thonon Black Panthers took part in the newly founded IFAF Europe Champions League . As group winners, they went straight to the semi-finals and were defeated by the Serbian champions Vukovi Beograd .

From 2005 the Canadian Larry Legault was Head Coach, who was also Head Coach of the French national team. He was replaced by Fabien Ducousso.
