The Bienna Jets are a Swiss American football club from Biel , which was founded in 1985 from a merger between the Bienna Bulls and the Grenchen Cowboys . At the moment they play in the National League B , which is the second highest division.

history

In 1983 a handful of football madmen decided to stop watching the sport on TV and founded one of the first American football teams in Switzerland. Originally intended for fun games and tournaments, in 1985 they were a founding member of the SFL (Swiss Football League) after the merger. After almost three decades with many ups and downs, the Bienna Jets are a football giant in Switzerland and an indispensable part of the local football scene.

Chronology of the seasons played

2011

With again only one defeat, being first in the table and with the trophy for the NLB champions in their pockets, they go to the promotion game against the Basel Meanmachine, who had been promoted last year. In an exciting game that was more than just NLA-worthy, the Jets won 40:34.

2010

A defeat throughout the season, table leader in the regular season and NLB champion. Nevertheless, the jets are defeated in the play-off final of the NLB against the second-placed Basel Meanmachine . They then won the promotion game against the Winterthur Warriors, who now contested the 2011 season with the Bienna Jets in the NLB.

2009

The jets reach the 2nd qualification place and are again subject to the NLB final, this time to the Gladiators of both Basel .

2008

The second season in the NLB was completed for the first time with the two new head coaches Spiropolous (CAN) and Brooks (USA). The concept works, the regular season can only be won with Swiss players . However, after a memorable performance, the final is just lost 20:21 against the Geneva Seahawks and the Jets will have to contest season 09 again in the NLB. For the first time in a long time, the juniors are again in midfield, this time in the single league, which was staged for the first time, and in the end they finished in seventh place.

2007

The Jets dominated the NLB at will, but two days before the end they gambled away the final participation and the envisaged promotion to the NLA miserably. In a group of only three participants, the youngsters come last without scoring a point.

2006

The Bienna Jets are playing a balanced season in the NLA, but will still be relegated at the end of the year. Two memorable defeats against the Prattelen Gladiators and the Bern Grizzlies were then decisive for the relegation, only four touchdowns emphasized the bitter truth. The offspring of the Jets went down without a hitch in the championship and took last place in the A group.

The highlight of the season was the visit of Ben Roethlisberger , quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers , to the Swiss Bowl in Bern.

2005

The first team dominated the NLB and rose again to the NLA without a loss point. The juniors reach the play-offs and are again subject to the Winterthur Warriors, but are the only team in the league to defeat the eventual Swiss champions Geneva Seahawks .

In October 2005 the Bienna Jets will celebrate their twentieth anniversary.

2004

Due to restructuring and departures in the team, the power of the Jets was so decimated that after the fourth game they were faced with almost 30% failures and from then on could only play 8-man football. They were relegated to the NLB. The juniors reached the final for the first time, but were subject to the Winterthur Warriors there .

2003

With the increase in strong US imports and the player potential of some teams, American football in Switzerland is becoming more attractive and professional. This is so troubling for the small Biel club that it does not reach the play-offs for the first time, but on the penultimate matchday they save themselves from relegation to the NLB against the Thun Tigers .

2002

The Jets only reach the play-offs with a lot of luck, which they can secure two games before the end of the qualification thanks to a favorable match schedule.

2001

The Bienna Jets finished the qualification in first place, but were subject to the Zurich Renegades in the first play-off game.

2000

The club reached the play-offs again, but the Jets were clearly defeated against the up-and-coming Seaside Vipers and finally ended the season in fourth place.

1999

The Jets reach the play-offs for the first time after being promoted again and lose to the Seaside Vipers. The juniors ended up in last place.

1998

The first team took fifth place, which secured the Bielers to stay in the NLA. At a tournament with an international line-up in Winterthur, the Jets took second place behind the NLA champion Seaside Vipers. After three years without it, the Jets put back a junior team, which this year reached the sixth final rank.

1997

The Jets subsequently won every game and defeated the Lausanne Sharks in the final. After a “ perfect season ” they were promoted back to the NLA just two years after relegation. In the Swiss Cup, which was held for the first time, the Bielers only lost to the NLA champion and Euro Cup winner Seaside Vipers in the finals in Winterthur.

1996

After a lossless qualification, the Bienna Jets lost against the Prattelen Gladiators in the NLB final. The promotion game against the second from bottom of the NLA, the Zurich Renegades, is also lost. As a small consolation, the Jets won the three-country tournament in Freiburg (D).

1995

The Bienna Jets reached the play-offs again, but this time they lost to the St. Gallen Vipers in the first round. Since the club could not provide a junior team for the following year, it had to relegate to the NLB due to a rule regarding junior compulsory education at the green table, which was back in 1996.

1994

NLA and NLB were merged again. In the re-established single league, the Jets reached the play-offs , but were defeated by this year's champions Basilisk Meanmachine in the first round. The junior team had to be withdrawn due to a lack of players.

1993

The Jets are again champions in NLB West. In the second attempt they also won the promotion game, but this time the opponent was Zurich Renegades. The junior team achieved third place in their first season as a small place in the final bill.

1992

The Jets became champions in NLB West almost immediately, but were then defeated by the Bülach Giants in the promotion game. In parallel to the first team, the development of a junior team will start this year.

1991

The Bienna Jets started a new sporting start and contested the season with many rookies . It was therefore no great surprise that the club had to relegate to National League B (NLB) only four years after the introduction of a second division at the end of the season.

1990

After a long season, the jets took last place. Only thanks to a victory in the relegation did the jets stay in the NLA.

1989

After numerous departures from the final team in 1988, the Bienna Jets only finished seventh at the end of the season.

1988

The inclusion of newly founded teams led to the introduction of two leagues, the National League A and National League B. The Jets reached the final in National League A (NLA) for the first time, but are subject to the Zurich Renegades there .

1987

The Bienna Jets reached 4th place in the Swiss championship.

1986

The local association changed its name from SFL to Swiss American Football Association (SAFV). The Jets took third qualifying place at the end of the season.

1985

After the merger, the newly formed club took part in the Raiders Bowl in St. Gallen for the first time.
