In 1999 and 2000 he was responsible for looking after the wide receivers  . In 2001, he worked as an attack coordinator and quarterback coach at his former school, San Clemente High School, and in 2002 he was an assistant coach at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California, where he was responsible for the quarterback position. In 2004 and 2005 he was again active at Saddleback College, where he coordinated the attack game and took care of the quarterbacks.

Outside of the football season in his home country, Buffum worked in Austria  as head coach for the Swarco Raiders Tirol from 2004 . He held this position until the summer of 2008, sometimes as a player-coach. Under his leadership, the team won the national championship in 2004 and 2006, the European Cup EFAF Cup in 2004 and the Eurobowl in 2008 .
