Chris Calaycay

Christopher Kekoa Calaycay (born March 31, 1976 in Hawaii ) is an American football coach and former player.

Life

Calaycay was born in Hawaii and grew up in Oregon . He played football as a defender at Willamette University and from 1999 to 2001 for the Vienna Vikings in Austria. With the Viennese he was used as a quarterback , were with them 1999, 2000 and 2001 respectively Austrian champions and reached with them 2001 the Eurobowl , which however was lost to the Bergamo Lions  . In 2000 and 2001, Calaycay was also an assistant coach at Willamette University in Austria. In 2002 and 2003 he was a member of the coaching staff at the University of California, Berkeley  , where, as at Willamette University, he was involved in looking after the defense players.

In 2004 and 2005, Calaycay worked as defense coordinator for the Vienna Vikings, during which time he contributed to winning the 2004 and 2005 Eurobowl and the 2005 national championship. In the 2006 season, in which the Eurobowl was won again, he was co-head coach and defense coordinator in Vienna, and from 2007 onwards he was the main head coach. Under Calaycay's leadership, the team won the Eurobowl in 2007 and 2013 and the Austrian championship in 2007, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2017. He was also in the Eurobowl with Vienna in 2008, 2010 and 2012, but lost there as well as in the finals for the Austrian championship in 2006, 2011, 2018 and 2019.

In addition to his job as coach of the Wiener, Calaycay worked from 2006 to 2011 and in 2014 as the defense coordinator of the Austrian national team. He was part of the coaching staff at the 2010 European Championship, when Austria finished third, and at the 2014 European Championship, when they won silver. He resigned in October 2014 and became part of the US national team with a view to the 2015 World Cup. There he took care of the linebackers . At the end of November 2019, Calaycay was again the defense coordinator of the Austrian selection.
