The Austrian Football League 2009 was the 25th season of the top Austrian men's American football division . It began on March 28, 2009 with the game of the Carinthian Black Lions against the Danube Dragons (28:51) and ended on July 18, 2009 with the Austrian Bowl XXV in Graz .

In the final, Raiffeisen Vikings Vienna , fourth place after the regular season, surprisingly won 22:19 against the Turek Graz Giants , the reigning champions and runner-up after the regular season. It was the Vikings' tenth championship title.

No Austrian team took part in the EFAF Cup this year , as numerous structural changes to the AFL that came into force this season resulted in a more dense schedule for the teams in question.

Innovations

After the end of the 24th season of the AFL, dissatisfaction with the structure of the AFL increased, especially among the Carinthian Black Lions and the Cineplexx Blue Devils . These two teams considered participating in the continuation of the existing mode no longer into consideration, which a new league model of the top division was required. It was reduced to the four strongest clubs, Raiffeisen Vikings Vienna , Turek Graz Giants , Swarco Raiders Tirol and Danube Dragons , and a so-called interdivision was founded with the Black Lions and the Blue Devils. These two teams played games with both Division I and AFL teams . In addition, the two interdivision teams were each guaranteed a starting place in the playoff wildcard games. Should they be better placed in the final table of the regular season than a team from the AFL, as was the case with the Blue Davils and the Vienna Vikings, then home rights went to the interdivision team.

Another special regulation of the interdivision teams concerned the legionnaires' restrictions. They were allowed to play against AFL teams with four Class A legionnaires on the roster and three on the field. Against teams of Division I, the regulation applied there applies that two Class A legionaries are allowed to stand on the roster and playing field.

Those responsible for the two rival clubs Raiffeisen Vikings Vienna and Danube Dragons have agreed on a further innovation by upgrading this prestigious game to the Blue River Bowl in the sense of the "Rivaly Games" traditional in college football . The two Blue River Bowls held this season went to the Danube Dragons. In Blue River Bowl II, the Dragons also managed to win for the first time in history on the Hohe Warte .
