The relics of St. Liborius are carried through the city at the Liborifest.

Libori is an annual nine-day church and folk festival in Paderborn and one of the largest and oldest folk festivals in Germany. It is the most important and traditional festival for the city of Paderborn. It attracts up to 1.8 million visitors annually. The time of the Libori Festival towards the end of July is also known as Paderborn's fifth season .

origin

The origin of the festival goes back to the year 836 when the relics of St. Liborius von Le Mans were brought from France to the episcopal city of Paderborn as part of the reliquary translations customary at the time . When the group of clergymen who had set out for Le Mans reached Paderborn again, they did so with great public participation.

The festival took place from the 9th century, the later Libori fair goes back to the "Magdalenenmarkt" (1521).

Appointment and church celebrations

The Liboro Festival lasts nine days and usually begins on the first Saturday after July 23, the feast of St. Liborius. Exceptions are the years on which July 23rd falls on a Saturday or Sunday. In these cases, the Liborifest begins on July 23 or July 22. The highlights of the church celebrations are the elevation and exposure of the golden shrine with the relics of St. Liborius on the first Libori Saturday; a procession with the shrine through the city on the following Sunday, accompanied by church associations and orders as well as the riflemen , as well as the burial of the shrine on Libori Tuesday. During the pontifical vespers for the exposure of the Libori shrine and the festive devotion for the burial of the shrine, the “Libori Tusch ” is played by winds , which is framed with organ sounds and is intended to announce the presence of the saint.

Secular celebrations and offers

It is above all the mixture of religious and secular celebrations that defines the Liborifest. A 1.6 kilometer (800 meter there and back) long fair mile on the Liboriberg ensures varied fair fun. At the pot market on the cathedral and market square, you will find a range of consumer goods and food. On the town hall square there is the beer fountain and in the so-called Plaza Europa you can find international culinary specialties. There are also concerts, street music, cabaret, etc. The festive season ends with a firework display over the Pader spring area on Sunday evening .

Autumn Libori

Towards the end of October, the Autumn Libori or Small Libori are celebrated in Paderborn . This is more of a fair that takes place like in summer on the Liboriberg, only a little smaller. The return of the relics to Paderborn is celebrated after they were stolen in the Thirty Years' War by Christian von Braunschweig , known as the "great Christian". On the weekend after October 25th or on the weekend of October 25th itself, if this is a Sunday, the church and the city of Paderborn celebrate the outer celebrations of the autumn and Kleinliborifestes: On Saturday evening there will be a public ceremony with a lecture in the Paderborn town hall the Liborius Society. On the following Sunday, the Archbishop of Paderborn celebrates a pontifical office in the High Cathedral in Paderborn , in which the Libori relics are collected at the beginning. In the afternoon, at the end of the Libori Brotherhood Service, the solemn burial of the relics takes place.
