The nearest larger cities are Zeven about 13 km to the west, Buxtehude about 25 km to the northeast, Hamburg about 45 km to the northeast and Bremen about 50 km to the southeast. Groß Meckelsen belongs to the European Metropolitan Region of Hamburg through the Rotenburg (Wümme) district .

Groß Meckelsen is located in the Zevener Geest natural area on the river Oste . The Oste leaves Gross Meckelsen to the northwest and flows on the border of the municipalities Belum in Cuxhaven and Balje in the district Stade in the same - estuary . history

Groß Meckelsen was first mentioned around 1000 AD as australi mikilanstidi in a Verden bishopric. The name is said to go back to the first settler named Michael. In the 16th and 17th centuries there were further mentions by name, for example in 1513 as Mekelstede and in 1643 as Grosse Mekelstedt . The name Groß Meckelsen appeared for the first time in 1729.

After antique potsherds had been found in a field in the district of Groß Meckelsen, excavations began in 1986, carried out by the district archaeologist of the Rotenburg (Wümme) district. A complete settlement site from the time of the emperors and the migration of peoples ( pit houses ) was found, which had been inhabited for several centuries.
