The Oste leaves Gross Meckelsen to the northwest and flows on the border of the municipalities Belum in Cuxhaven and Balje in the district Stade in the same - estuary . Groß Meckelsen was first mentioned around 1000 AD as australi mikilanstidi in a Verden bishopric. The name is said to go back to the first settler named Michael.
