Scheeßel is a unified municipality in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district in Lower Saxony .

Geographical location

Scheeßel is in the Wümmeniederung belonging to the Stader Geest not far from the Nordheide at an altitude of about 30.36  m above sea level. NN . The Wümme and the Beeke flow through the village . The area is characterized by forests, meadows and moors ( geest landscape ).

The Bullerberg , located in the Westerholz district , with its 53 meters is one of the highest elevations in the district.

The district town of Rotenburg (Wümme) is about nine kilometers away. The next larger cities are Bremen, around 40 kilometers away, and Hamburg, around 50 kilometers away .

history

Stone Age graves in the community bear witness to a settlement in prehistory and early history . A place Schesla was mentioned in a document together with Bardowick , Magdeburg and Erfurt in 805 in the Diedenhofen capitular of Charlemagne . It is unclear whether this is today's Scheeßel. This Schesla could have been in the Hitzacker / Dannenberg area, as the Jeetzel river could have contributed to the naming here. Scheeßel local historians referred to a Verden bishopric from 1205, in which Scheeßel is referred to as scesle . Today there is no longer any doubt that the place Schesla was not today's Scheeßel.

Scheeßel was named in 1205 as an archdeaconate and in the 13th century as a gografschaft of the Diocese of Verden .
After 1567, under Bishop Eberhard von Holle , the Reformation took hold in the region; Scheeßel is almost purely Protestant to this day. In 1626 the church, rectory, mill and some houses burned down.

With the Peace of Westphalia of 1648, the duchies of Bremen and Verden and with it Scheeßel went to Sweden until they fell to the Electorate of Hanover in 1719 after the Northern War , after a brief Danish rule .

The Seven Years' War affected the region more than the 30-year-old. Marauding French troops were responsible. The Rotenburg bailiff from Haerlem sums up the consequences for the population in 1757 as follows: “The local subordinates have been ruined for many years.” In 1755 a Romanesque church was demolished and the baroque St. Lucas Church was built by 1758.

During the French era , Scheeßel was part of France from 1810 to 1813 in the canton of Tostedt in the Elbe estuary ( Bouches de l'Elbe ). A road (now the B 75 ) was laid out during this time.

After the Congress of Vienna in 1814/15, Scheeßel belonged to the Kingdom of Hanover . Extensive social and economic changes took place over the next few decades such as a. Freedom of trade , common divisions , linkages and the final replacement of landlord duties.

In 1866 the Kingdom of Hanover became the Prussian Province of Hanover . In 1874 the place was connected to the Hamburg-Bremen railway line and the Scheeßel station was built. In 1876 citizens of Scheeßel founded a savings bank that still exists today. At the end of the century, the farmers formed a dairy cooperative. Traditional costume festivals (1904) and local history association (1905) were created to maintain tradition.

In the July 1932 elections in the Weimar Republic , the NSDAP in the Scheeßel parish was by far the strongest party. The seizure of power by the Nazis took place without any problems, political life in Scheeßel was brought into line.

In the Second World War , Scheeßel was largely spared; Only in Wohlsdorf there was violent fighting in April 1945. Then the population doubled due to the refugees.

Incorporations

On March 1, 1974 the independent communities Abbendorf, Bartelsdorf, Hetzwege, Jeersdorf, Ostervesede, Sothel, Westeresch, Westerholz, Westervesede, Wittkopsbostel and Wohlsdorf were incorporated into the single community Scheeßel.

Since 2001 Käthe Dittmer-Scheele (CDU) has been the full-time mayor of the Scheeßel community. In the last mayoral election on May 25, 2014, she was re-elected as incumbent with 63.5% of the vote. The turnout was 62.5%. Dittmer-Scheele began her further term on November 1, 2014.

The local museum

The Scheeßel local history museum shows the living and working world of the 19th century on two self-contained courtyards with a total of 13 historical half-timbered buildings. As early as 1913, the so-called "Heimathaus" was removed from its original location and rebuilt as a museum building. The facility has been continuously expanded since the 1970s. Today, the home and business of the people is shown on a courtyard with a low German hall house. Textile handicrafts ( spinning , weaving , blueprint , tatting ) are kept alive on the grounds of the historic Meyerhof .

Traditional costume groups

Scheeßel is known for its regional costume groups . The best known are the dance and costume group De Beekscheepers Scheeßel e. V. and the Original Scheeßeler Trachtengruppe . Both groups have dedicated themselves to the task of making North German cultural assets known nationally and internationally and maintaining them. Every year there is a big traditional costume festival in Scheeßel, which is known far beyond the borders of Scheeßel. This is organized alternately by the Beekscheepers and the Original Scheeßeler Trachtengruppe and every time there are many traditional costume groups from home and abroad. From 19 to 21 July 2013, the International Beeke Festival , previously known as the Beeke Trachtenfest , organized by the Beekscheepers took place for the 20th time.

In 1973 and 1977, large open-air festivals took place on the Eichenring in Scheeßel with musicians and groups such as Chicago , Chuck Berry and Golden Earring . Since the late 1990s, Scheeßel has been home to a large open-air festival: the Hurricane Festival was first held on the Eichenring in 1997 . This music event takes place annually in June (2008: around 75,000 visitors).

The Heimat Festival has existed as a music festival since 2014, annually in May .

Scheeßel court linden tree

In the open space in front of the church stands the venerable Scheeßel court linden tree . The sloping winter linden tree has a split, hollow trunk in which support bolts have been inserted for stabilization. The 21 meter high tree is estimated to be 500–600 years old. The square under the linden tree is a historic court square where the Gogericht was held from 1288 .

The pedunculate oak, which is more than 500 years old, is on the road to Westerholz, opposite the historic Scheeßeler mill. The tree has a short, stocky trunk that divides into three towering main branches after a few meters. The expansive, almost horizontal cross branches protrude far into the street area.

Economy and Infrastructure

Numerous small and, above all, medium-sized companies have settled in Scheeßel and the surrounding towns, as the town is conveniently located between the metropolitan areas of Hamburg, Bremen and Hanover. Scheeßel is also one of the main focuses of tourism in the Wümmeniederung .

The central town of Scheeßel is the location of several general practitioners' practices, a pediatrician, an ophthalmologist and several nursing homes. A nursing home is located in the village of Ostervesede. There are also several dental practices here.

Passage of the B 75 in Scheeßel

The federal highway 75 runs through the municipality and the federal highway 1 runs nearby (about 15 km to the junction in Sittensen ). This location means that Hamburg, Bremen or Hanover can be reached in about an hour by car and the holiday regions of the North and Baltic Seas and the Harz Mountains can be reached by car in two hours at the most. It is unclear when the bypassing of the B 75 can be realized. The construction project was placed on project lists and removed again several times.

The main line Hamburg – Bremen (–Ruhr area) runs east of the village. The planned Y-route should branch off from this near Scheeßel . Scheeßel has a train station on the Wanne-Eickel – Hamburg line , where trains operated by the Metronom Railway Company stop on the Hamburg-Bremen connection as part of the Hanse network . By train you can get to Bremen in just 40 minutes and Hamburg in just under 50 minutes. Scheeßel has been part of the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund since the end of 2019 .
