Settlement structure

The municipality of Bothel is not divided into districts . It is difficult to locate a clear center: On the one hand, the area where the district roads from Rotenburg, Brockel and Kirchwalsede meet and where shops and restaurants can be found are important. In the old, village center on Hauptstrasse and Dorfstrasse there is a branch of Sparkasse Scheeßel , a post office, other shops and restaurants next to old farms . Spacious new single-family housing estates are grouped mainly around the newer administrative center on Horstweg with schools , a doctor's practice , a community center and the town hall .

In the extreme south, with the settlement of Bretel, there are some plots of land in the village of Bretel, which otherwise belongs to Visselhövede, in Botheler municipal area.

history

Emergence

Bothel is a medieval foundation of farm workers from the Trochel estate, which was then in the Verden territory . The name is derived either from the Old Low German Bostel (small forest), which can indicate clearing within a forest, or it contains the root word Bod (rule). Bothel was first mentioned in a document in 1226.

Early modern age

Bothel shared the history of the Verden territory and later of the Bremen-Verden area , which was part of Sweden after the Thirty Years War and later became part of the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg , later the Kingdom of Hanover . Napoléon Bonaparte laid out a large military road (now Bundesstraße 440 ) past Bothel .

post war period

After the Second World War , the place grew initially due to the influx of refugees from the former German eastern regions , Czechoslovakia and Bessarabia . From the 1960s onwards, the old town center became more densely populated and several residential areas were built, to which many new residents from southern Germany , eastern Germany or from the countries of the former Eastern Bloc moved. Today, Bothel is characterized by large new development areas with single-family houses . A large part of the population commutes to the district town of Rotenburg or to the neighboring cities of Hamburg and Bremen. In the town center there are still agricultural farms, but only a few farms are left.

religion

Bothel does not own a church, just a cemetery chapel. Most denominational citizens belong to the Evangelical Lutheran parish Brockel within the church region Visselhövede are on, in which the municipalities Brockel, Kirchwalsede and Visselhoevede combined. The Roman Catholic residents belong to the Corpus Christi community in Rotenburg . There are also residents of the Islamic faith, Jehovah's Witnesses , members of free churches , Baptists , members of the New Apostolic Church and, as in all of Germany, a growing group of non-denominationalists.

Trivia

According to a local anecdote, the Brockeler Church should originally have been built in Bothel. This should have failed because the building material was stolen and brought to Brockel. Among other things, this anecdote shows a traditional rivalry between the neighboring towns.
