history

Place name

Old names of the place are 1219 Geihem , without dating Gygoem and in the 18th century Camp de Gihum .
The name Gyhum indicates the establishment of the place in the old Saxon times. Perhaps the old Saxon personal name Gye or Guy and the word hem = heim is in the name. An old Saxon named Gye or Guy could have founded the place. On the other hand , there is no n or s before the hem , as is to be expected with male personal names. An Old Icelandic ghei-gh, or geiga for
swiveling sideways or taking gaigr for damage, as well as the Norwegian geiga for a crooked direction, could also be interpreted for the syllable Gyh , perhaps because of the striking location of the place at the foot of a hill, which is around 50 m height in this flat area.

middle Ages

The area around Gyhum was already inhabited in prehistoric times. Finds come from the Middle Stone Age (800–4000 BC) as well as from the Bronze and Iron Ages. The 1000 year old Gyhumer Church is one of the oldest churches between the Weser and Elbe. It was only mentioned in 1420 in the Stader Kopiar. The von Geihem family , mentioned around 1200, named themselves after the place and was probably an early owner of the Gyhum court. Later, the property fell by Geihem the stiftsbremische ministerials - and noble family of Borch . After Iwan von Borch († 1502) his niece Ilse Margarethe inherited the goods. Her husband Otto von Düring built an independent large farm in Bokel. The Reformation took place in the village around 1525.

Gyhum belonged to the Archdiocese of Bremen in the Middle Ages, to the Swedish Duchy of Bremen from 1648 and to the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg ( Kurhannover for short ) since 1715 and the Kingdom of Hanover since 1814/15.

17th century until today

In the Thirty Years' War from 1618 to 1648, many buildings were destroyed in Gyhum. The subsequent poverty could not be overcome until the beginning of the 19th century. French troops under Marshal Richelieu camped in the Camp de Gihum during the Seven Years' War around 1757/58 .

In 1848 the rectory burned down; all documents, records and the village chronicle were destroyed. In 1908 Gyhum had 376 inhabitants, in 1947 there were 734 inhabitants.

Damage to buildings had to be accepted in April 1945 during World War II when English troops liberated the place. After the war Gyhum became an independent community.

Incorporation, joint municipality

On March 1, 1974, the municipalities of Bockel, Hesedorf bei Gyhum, Nartum and Wehldorf were incorporated as part of the district reform. In 1974 it was merged with three other municipalities to take care of its administrative business to form the Zeven municipality .
