Erlend Martini (born June 1, 1932 in Berlin-Charlottenburg ) is a German micropalaeontologist. Martini became internationally known as a specialist in nannoplankton . In 1971 he published an authoritative nannoplankton zoning . Until his retirement in 1994 Martini worked at the Geological-Palaeontological Institute of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

life and work

He attended Hermann Lietz schools in Bieberstein id Rhön and Spiekeroog and studied geology - paleontology in Frankfurt am Main from 1952 to 1958 . He did his doctorate with Karl Krejci-Graf . From 1959 to 1961 it worked on projects funded by the DFG and from 1961 to 1963 worked as a research assistant at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla , California . After returning to Frankfurt in 1963, he completed his habilitation there in 1965.

At the University of Frankfurt he was a research assistant , later a lecturer and honorary professor and from 1971 a university professor . His scientific commitment (over 300 publications, not only about nannoplankton and biostratigraphy ) earned him the nickname “the nanno man” in professional circles. From 1969 to 1986 he was a consultant paleontologist on five voyages of the Glomar Challenger in the Pacific Ocean ( Deep Sea Drilling Project ).

Martini is active in the paleontological society , as well as in his place of residence Kronberg im Taunus with the German Forest Protection Association . In addition, he has been a member of the nature conservation advisory board in the Hochtaunus district from the start .
