history

The emergence of Wesseloh is in the settlement phases of the 7th / 8th. Century assumed. The place belonged to the diocese and monastery Verden and formed the border town between the monastery and the principality of Lüneburg. After Wesseloh came under the rule of the Swedish Crown at the end of the Thirty Years' War in 1648, it became the Electorate of Hanover in 1715 .

On March 1, 1974, Wesseloh was incorporated into the municipality of Schneverdingen.

School history

Since 1703 the Wesseloher could attend the school in Insel and from 1752 Wesseloh had its own schoolmaster. In 1846 the first school house was built in the village and expanded in 1891. At the time, Wilhelm Schulz was the first teacher in the village who had received full seminary training. However, he was transferred to a sentence for criticizing army officers.

The number of pupils rose continuously to 76, but the village politicians did not want to finance an expansion of the premises or a second teacher. Finally, a second teacher had to be hired and in 1927 rooms in a restaurant were rented for lessons. In 1939 the expansion of the schoolhouse, which was finally decided, was completed, but the second teacher was called up for military service. As a result of the war, the number of pupils continued to increase because of deportation and flight.

After the war, the population increased and there was a brief opportunity in 1950 to employ three teachers in Wesseloh, but village politicians did not take advantage of this opportunity due to financial concerns.

The process in which Wesseloh lost his school began in 1963. In that year, all 9th grade students were obliged to attend elementary school (later: Hauptschule) in Schneverdingen. In 1968 the 8th year was committed. Then the orientation level was established in Schneverdingen, which grades 5 to 7 had to attend. In 1983 the primary schools in Wesseloh and Insel merged. The third and fourth year were taught together in Insel. Only the first and the second year stayed in Wesseloh. In 1995 the Hansahlen elementary school was opened in Schneverdingen, which the children of primary school age from Wesseloh and Insel have to attend until today. The Insel / Wesseloh primary school was closed in 1995.
