Kinderberg and Stellbachniederung is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipalities of Lauenbrück , Stemmen and Vahlde in the joint municipality of Fintel in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district .

General

The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 302 is about 261  hectares . It is almost completely part of the FFH area "Wümmeniederung" and borders in the northwest on the nature reserve " Wümmeniederung with Rodau, Wiedau and Trochelbach ". The “ Schneckenstiege ” nature reserve is located a little to the northeast . The area has been under nature protection since June 1, 2015 (date of regulation: May 11, 2015). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Rotenburg (Wümme) district.

The need for protection of the area was already established in 1973. In order to prevent sand extraction for the expansion of the Bremen – Hamburg railway line , which borders on today's protected area in the southeast, the area was temporarily secured. A subsequent designation as a landscape protection area and a designation as a nature reserve planned in the 1980s, however, did not take place.

The nature reserve is located northeast of Lauenbrück on the edge of the Wümmeniederung. It protects the gently undulating dune area of the Kinderberg with its damp depressions and the valley of the Stellbach just above its confluence with the Wümme .

The dune area is occupied by different forest communities depending on the degree of moisture. Thus, breakage and bog woodland to find with alder, ash and willow and birch and pine, mixed oak forests and pine and spruce forests. In places, settle dry sand heaths with heather and gorse. The humid depressions are partially muddy. This is where peat moss settles - swinging lawns , narrow-leaved cottongrass and cottongrass , bog heaths with bell heather and common heather and damp bushes. In the predominantly wooded areas, arable and grassland areas , including wet and wet grassland, are scattered in places .

The area of ​​the Stellbach lowlands is characterized by moist to wet grassland on fens with swamps and reed beds . The strongly straightened Stellbach is accompanied by trees, reeds, sedge beds and riparian perennials . Despite the straightening, it presents itself as a near-natural flowing water with flooding water vegetation and is the habitat of brook lamprey , eel , pike , roach , brook trout , gudgeon and three-spined stickleback . The pond bat uses the Stellbach lowland as a feeding habitat. Various dragonflies such as the green mermaid , the arctic emerald dragonfly and the banded demoiselle are also native here, as is the otter , for which the Stellbach is also a walking corridor. Furthermore come in the nature reserve u. a. Spiegelfleck thick-headed butterfly , rust-colored thick -headed butterfly , brown forest bird , large ox-eye , blue buckthorn and country maps .

In the nature reserve are numerous on the Red List as endangered Lower Saxony or hard to find endangered plants, including rosemary , marsh marigold , stiff sedge , Walzensegge , Hirsesegge , thread rush , deergrass , meadow comb grass , mat grass , spotted orchid , marsh orchid , Sundew , gentian , Straußblütiger Yellow loosestrife , common adder's tongue , two-leaved forest hyacinth , white beaked reed , fever clover , common groundwort , cranberry , bogberry , small valerian , swamp violet , common juniper and nail bush .

The nature reserve is a feeding habitat for black stork and lapwing . The white-tailed eagle also breeds here .

The southern area of ​​the nature reserve drains through various ditches , including the Rieper Reithbach and the Rieper Forstgraben, to the Wümme. The northern area of ​​the nature reserve also drains via the Stellbach to the Wümme.
