The Wiestetal is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon town of Rotenburg (Wümme) and the communities Horstedt , Reeßum and Sottrum in the combined community of Sottrum in the district of Rotenburg (Wümme) and Ottersberg in the community of Flecken Ottersberg in the district of Verden .

The nature reserve with the label LÜ 295 is 382  hectares . Of this, 364 hectares are in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district and 18 hectares in the Verden district. 340 hectares of the area are part of the 837 hectare FFH area “Wiestetal, Glindbusch, Borchelsmoor” designated in 2004 . The area has been a nature reserve since January 15, 2013. The districts of Rotenburg (Wümme) and Verden fulfilled their obligation to secure the FFH area nationally by placing them under protection. The responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of Rotenburg (Wümme) and Verden.

The nature reserve is located east of Bremen . It extends along the Wieste between Mulmshorn and Otterberg and includes the flat between Geest hills situated stream running from the Wieste Mühlenbruch northwest of Mulmshorn until shortly before the mouth of the Wümme at Ottersberg and adjacent surfaces. Creeks that flow into the nature reserve are partially included, such as part of the Glindbach near Mulmshorn and the Weidebach north of Schleeßel. South-west of Schleeßel, the ponds located in a former sand mining area are included in the nature reserve. The ponds are extensively managed. In Sottrum the nature reserve is limited to the stream.

The nature reserve is characterized by the naturally meandering stream of the Wieste with flooding underwater vegetation. The stream is of alder - ash forests, reeds and Hochstaudenfluren accompanied. The areas adjacent to the stream are often occupied by extensively cultivated grassland of varying degrees of moisture . There are also swamps , Groß- and Kleinseggenrieder and mixed oak forests as well as isolated parcels of bog forest . The valley is the habitat of numerous animals, including the wolffish , river and brook lamprey , dragonflies such as the green mermaid and otters , for which the Wieste is also a walking corridor. The area is a feeding habitat for the black stork .

In Mulmshorn, Sottrum and Stuckenborstel, parts of the nature reserve are designated as a nature experience area. Measures to experience nature such as nature discovery trails can be implemented here.
