The Ekelmoor is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Stemmen in the joint municipality of Fintel in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district .

General

The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 047 is around 607  hectares in size. It is part of the FFH area “Wümmeniederung” and the bird sanctuary “Moore bei Sittensen”. In the north it borders on the " Tister Bauernmoor " nature reserve , with which it forms a biotope network. In the south it borders on the " Wümmeniederung mit Rodau, Wiedau and Trochelbach " nature reserve, which was designated as of August 1, 2020 and into which parts of the "Ekelmoor" nature reserve merge . The area has been a nature reserve since October 2, 1979. On February 2, 1985, it was merged with the "Südliches Ekelmoor" nature reserve, which was also designated on October 2, 1979. Parts of the landscape protection area "Wümmeniederung from the Rotenburg official bridge up to the Wümmebrücke in front of the village of Wümme" were included in the nature reserve, which was now around 652 hectares in size. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Rotenburg (Wümme) district.

The nature reserve is located southeast of Sittensen on the edge of the Wümmeniederung . It places a drained and partially drained raised bog under protection. The area is characterized by large open land areas that are followed by bushy or wooded areas. The open land areas consist of fallow grasslands , rush swamps and marsh grass meadows as well as raised bogs with peat bog ravines , transitional and swinging grass bogs and small areas of wet heaths with bell heather . Dwarf shrub heaths are formed in drier locations . Here dominates the heather , to be joined by crowberry , blueberries and cranberry . English and hairy gorse are strewn in the heather . The wooded areas are occupied by bog and pine forests made of downy birch , sand birch and Scots pine . In the southeast it go in the transition area to Wümme lowlands in swamp forests on swamp and bushes. In addition to the species already mentioned, rosemary heather and swamp calla, among others, settle in the nature reserve .

In 1990 the rewetting of the moor began, including, for example, in the pitted area of ​​the Zitshorn moor in the north-west of the nature reserve.

The nature reserve is the habitat of various amphibians . Dragonflies are represented, for example, by large and small moss maiden , moon azure maiden and Nordic moss maid. The nature reserve is a bird sanctuary habitat, among other things Crane , Eagle Owl , Eurasian Hobby , cuckoo , woodpecker , common snipe , lapwing , green sandpiper , nightjar , backed Shrike , Golden Oriole , Marsh Warbler , Redstart , grasshopper warbler , wood lark , Bluethroat , Whinchat , Stonechat , water rail and various ducks and Geese species , including shoveler , teal , teal and gadfly . Furthermore, the area is of particular importance for crane, hen harrier , gray goose, tufted duck , shoveler, teal, lapwing, little ringed plover , woodcock , green thigh and gray shrike as guest birds.

Parts of the moor are drained via ditches leading to the Wümme and the Oste .
