The Franzhorn is a forest area in the Lower Saxon community of Gnarrenburg in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district . Most of the forest is designated as a nature reserve.

Nature reserve

The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 331 is approximately 183  hectares . The almost 144 hectare FFH area of ​​the same name is completely part of the nature reserve. 41.8 hectares have been designated as natural forest since 1972 . The area has been under nature protection since November 1, 2018. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Rotenburg (Wümme) district.

The nature reserve is located southwest of Bremervörde . It places a forest area on a moraine of the Wesermünder Geest sloping in an easterly direction on the edge of a moorland in the north of the Teufelsmoor under protection. Beech forest , oak-beech forest and oak-hornbeam forest grow on the moraine, and in soaked depressions there are also alder and alder-ash forests on a historically old forest site. The beech forests are primarily characterized as grove beech forest with willows and grass . The forests have a high proportion of old and dead wood .

Coniferous forests consisting mainly of spruce are scattered over a small area in the forest area . In the south there are two fallow grassland areas within the forest area. The Brilliter Teiche, two former mining waters in the east of the area , are included in the nature reserve. The waste waters have developed naturally. They are partially surrounded by vineyards , reed beds and swamps as well as forests.

The nature reserve is the habitat of a species-rich, partially endangered flora and fauna. So falter here besides the predominant tree species common oak , sessile oak , beech and hornbeam u. a. White elm , holly and wild apple . Sanikel , mountain fern and small valerian also settle here . The swamp forests are primarily formed by ash and black alder . Here u. a. Roller sedge and marsh marigold . The ponds are home to various amphibians , including the newt . The nature reserve is the habitat of various bats . So here are Serotine , Daubenton's bat , whiskered bat , common pipistrelle and brown long-eared home.

Several paths run through the nature reserve. In the west, the area borders in small areas on the federal highway 74 , in the east on the railway line Stade-Osterholz-Scharmbeck .
