The population low is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon city ​​of Bremervörde and the communities Farven and Deinstedt in the Selsingen joint community in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district .

General

The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 307 is about 651 hectares. It essentially comprises part of the FFH area "Oste with tributaries" designated in 2004 . In the east it borders on the landscape protection area "Bever and Reither Bach" and on the northwest by the natural preserve "Ostetal" (which it replaces in part) and the nature reserve " Ostetal with tributary streams ." Furthermore, the nature reserve borders the " Bevern Forest " nature reserve east of the Bremervörs district Bevern . The area has been under protection since December 1, 2016. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Rotenburg (Wümme) district.

The nature reserve is located southeast of Bremervörde in the Zevener Geest . It extends along the Bever from the border with the Stade district to just above the confluence of the Bever into the Oste near Bremervörde. The nature reserve comprises the course of the river and the adjacent lowland area of the Bever as well as parts of the Reither Bach and adjacent areas in the area of ​​the Rotenburg (Wümme) district from the road between Reith and Kreisstraße 109 to the confluence with the Bever, the confluence of the Baaster Bach with the Bever, the otters with their lowland area east of the Beverner Wald below the road leading from Byhusen to Beverner Wald, part of the grassland area protruding from the Bever lowlands into the Beverner Wald , the Krogwiesen north of Deinstedt and the area of ​​the fish pit from the railway line between Bremervörde and Zeven up to its confluence with the Bevern.

In the area between Farven and Bevern, the nature reserve is characterized by grassland of varying intensity of use, reed beds, and wet and swamp forests . Large parts of the Bever flow meandering close to nature , sometimes with flooding water vegetation . Below Bevern there is intensively used grassland, in which trees are scattered in places. A small amount of arable land is also available. In the fish trench valley in the north of the nature reserve, wet grassland is predominant, some of which has been dammed for longer. The wet grassland is interspersed with swamps , reed beds and tall herbaceous vegetation. Species-rich bristle grass lawns and large sedge groves can be found in small areas . The Bever is accompanied in sections by tall herbaceous vegetation and trees. The forests in the low-lying areas are formed by alder-ash forests, alder-swamp forests , bog forests and damp oak-hornbeam forests . At the edge of the valley, beech and oak mixed forests grow on drier locations. The forests have a high proportion of old and dead wood .

The nature reserve is the habitat of the otter . Fish and lampreys are z. B. represented by eel , pike , sea ​​trout , brown trout , loach , three-spined and nine-spined stickleback , gudgeon , moderlieschen , aland , hazel , river perch , ruff , roach , chub , tench , river lamp and brook lamprey. Dragonflies are represented by the green mermaid , the great pitch dragonfly , the common mugmaid , the shiny emerald dragonfly and the great blue arrow . Various amphibians are also native to the nature reserve . North of the fish trench, smaller occurrences of are bog frog proven. The grassland areas in the nature reserve, especially in the lower reaches of the Bever, are the habitat of various meadow birds , including the curlew , snipe and lapwing .

The nature reserve borders predominantly on agricultural areas and in places on forests. In Malstedt , Plönjeshausen and Bevern it borders in places on the residential development of the places. At the Reither Bach, the nature reserve west of Bredenbeck is interrupted around 200 meters; here the area worthy of protection lies entirely in the district of Stade.
