The Tister Bauernmoor is a raised bog that was declared a nature reserve on May 2nd, 2002 . It has a size of 570 hectares and, together with the Ekelmoor nature reserve to the south , the Avensermoor and the Everstorfer Moor, forms part of the large raised bog area Ekelmoor, which has a total area of ​​1220 hectares.

location

The Tister Bauernmoor is located near the town of Tiste , which gave it its name. Tiste is a municipality in the Sittensen municipality in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district in Lower Saxony . The moor area belongs to the natural area of ​​the Wümmeniederung .

Renaturation

Most of the moor had been pelted industrially. In the northern area, the moor had been converted to grassland, but it is no longer cultivated. About a third of the nature reserve was rewetted for renaturation. The areas overgrown with Weymouths pines were freed from growth. These areas are now breeding and resting places for many, sometimes rare, bird species. Almost all of the nature reserves (564 ha) belong to the EU bird sanctuary "Moore bei Sittensen". The Rotenburg (Wümme) district acts as the lower nature conservation authority.

Flora and fauna

The crane has settled here again and is raising its young. The Tister Bauernmoor is one of the most important crane spots in the northwestern German lowlands. In late autumn, several thousand cranes rest in the moor before they fly on to their winter quarters. In 2008 about 5,000 resting cranes were counted here. On Monday, October 27, 2014, official crane counters from NABU then counted and officially confirmed a record of 20,600 cranes in the Tister Bauernmoor. The rare white-tailed eagle and osprey have also been spotted here. The following birds of prey have also been observed in the bog: tree falcon , peregrine falcon , merlin , marsh harrier , hen harrier , Montagu's harrier , red kite , black kite , honey buzzard and buzzard . In addition, are breeding records, but at least breeding season observations: Short-eared Owl , Great Gray Shrike , Common Teal , teal , shoveler , black stork , common snipe , lapwing , nightjar , grasshopper warbler , Stonechat , Whinchat and Red-backed Shrike before. The list of resting birds includes more than 40 species.

Due to the lack of nutrients, the acidic pH value of the water and the continuous accumulation of water, a highly specialized flora has developed in the Tister Bauernmoor. We find the dwarf shrub heather , cotton grass and above all peat moss . Sundew , a carnivorous plant, also grows here .

tourism

A former peat train can be used to drive into the moor. The trip with detailed explanations on peat bog removal takes an hour. But there is also a hiking trail in the area. A 6.5 m high roofed observation tower ( ⊙ ) in the moor offers the opportunity to observe the bird world. It was built in 2002 and can be reached either by moor railway or via the hiking trail.
