About 30 hectares of the nature reserve overlap with the FFH area "Osteschleifen between Kranenburg and Nieder-Ochtenhausen". To the west of Kranenburg, the area borders on the nature reserve “ Meadows and pastures on the Oste ”, part of which has risen up in the “Osteschleifen” nature reserve. description

The nature reserve, which consists of seven sub-areas, extends along the Oste between Niederochenhausen north of Bremervörde and Hechthausen between Stade and Hemmoor . It comprises seven areas with pütten, which lie in the floodplain area of the Oste and are partially connected to it. In detail, these are (in the direction of flow of the Oste) the sub-areas "Pütte Gräpel" ( ) southwest of Graepel , "Pütte Wiemelkerngraben" ( ) northwest of Graepel, "Pütte Schönau" ( ) southwest of Brobergen , "Pütte Laumühlen" ( ) and "Pütte Kranenburg" ( ) north-west of Kranenburg (this sub-area also includes another section of the Oste from the mouth of the Mehe to the Pütte Laumühlen, which here over its entire length to the nature reserve "Meadows and pastures on the Oste" bordering), "Pütte Blumenthal" ( ) southwest of Hechthausen and "Pütte Burweg" ( ) southeast of Hechthausen. With the exception of the northernmost section southeast of Hechthausen, sections of the Oste are included in the nature reserve. The pütten were created by removing soil for dyke construction measures. The dikes in the Pütten area were relocated at the beginning of the 21st century to create flood plains for flood protection . In addition, the “Geestrand Hude” sub-area ( ), an area north of Niederochenhausen on the border of the districts of Stade and Rotenburg (Wümme), includes a nature reserve in which a non-diked area of the Oste runs close to the Geest edge .

The extensive areas are subject to the river dynamics of the Oste and the influence of the tide from the Elbe into the river . They can develop their own dynamics, so that flow Watten , reedbeds , Hochstaudenfluren and a natural Auelandschaft may arise. The Oste is part of the habitat and migratory corridor for river and sea lamprey as well as the European sturgeon , which was reintroduced in the Oste.

The sub-area "Geestrand Hude" is characterized by the Geestkante sloping down towards the east, on which various trees grow. In front of it are reed beds and tall herbaceous vegetation on moist locations. The area is a suitable habitat for the otter and is a habitat for various bat species , including pond , water and piped bat . In this sub-area, an approximately 1.8 hectare, extensively used orchard meadow is included in the scope of the nature conservation ordinance.

The nature reserve borders mainly on agricultural areas . The sub-area “Pütte Burweg” borders the federal highway 73 in the north . The route of the planned federal motorway 20 runs through the “Geestrand Hude” sub-area in the north .
