The Geesteniederung is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon villages of Wehdel and Getesteth in the municipality of Schiffdorf , in Frelsdorf in the municipality of Beverstedt and in the villages of Ringstedt and Köhlen in the city of Geestland in the district of Cuxhaven .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 297 is around 505  hectares . A large part of it is part of the FFH area “Lowlands of Geeste and Grove”. In the east it borders on the nature reserve " Obere Geeste" in the districts of Cuxhaven and Rotenburg (Wümme) and on the nature reserve " Obere Geesteiederung ". The area has been under nature protection since October 11, 2013. The “ Im Gliesch ” nature reserve, designated in 1979, and the “ Fleinsee / Altluneberger See ” nature reserve, designated in 1988, have merged into it . The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Cuxhaven.

The nature reserve is located east of Bremerhaven in the lowlands of the Geeste . It includes parts of the upper and middle reaches of the Geeste between the border of the districts of Cuxhaven and Rotenburg (Wümme) north of Hipstedt and the mouth of the Sellstedter Grove slightly above the Elbe-Weser shipping route , the mouth areas of the backwaters as well as parts of the river lowlands and the transitions to Geest . Parts of the lower reaches of the Frelsdorfer Mühlenbach, from the fish ponds north of Frelsdorf, the Grove and Scheidebach north of Altluneberg and the Sellstedter Grove, are included in the nature reserve . Furthermore, the Great Moor, north-east of Geesteeth between the Geeste and the Frelsdorfer Mühlenbach, and the Fleinsee and Altluneberger See, lying north of Altluneberg, which fell dry in the course of the expansion of the Geeste in 1961, are part of the nature reserve. The section of the Geeste east of the Great Moor in the district of Rotenburg (Wümme) is excluded from the nature reserve.

In the east of the nature reserve between the border between the districts of Cuxhaven and Rotenburg (Wümme) and the bridge on state road 128 south of Köhlen, the Geeste meanders as a rapidly flowing Geestbach with characteristic water and bank vegetation through the valley lowers. The Geeste is of wet grassland , wet broke , lowland forest remnants , from alder and birch dominated swamp forests and peat accompanied residues. From around the bridge on state road 128, the floodplain widens into an extensive valley. In this area, the Geeste is largely developed and the lowland is provided with ramparts. In individual sections of the Geeste there is still species-rich aquatic vegetation with floating leaf plants and underwater vegetation rich in spawning herbs . There are oxbow lakes of the Geeste in several places . The bank areas of the river are rich in structure, in addition to reed areas with reed and cane grass, there are also sections with willow bushes . Large parts of the lowland are mainly used agriculturally as often moist permanent grassland . In addition, wetlands, reeds and sedges can be found. There are a few arable land . In the Fleinsee / Altluneberger See area, extensive reed beds and sedges can be found. In the Geeste lowlands, marginal bogs with wood-free bog vegetation or transitional bog vegetation with heather , pipe grasses and fork bushes can be found in part.

The nature reserve is a habitat for various endangered animal and plant species, including pond bats , otters , fish such as brook , river and sea lamprey , Atlantic salmon , sea trout , wolffish , mud whitebird , birds such as sea eagles , kingfisher , lapwing and various waders , including black- tailed godwit , Common snipe and curlew , butterflies such as the great fire butterfly , and dragonflies such as the great moss damsel and the green mermaid .

Above the bridge on Landesstrasse 128 there is a year-round ban on entering the Geeste with watercraft in the interests of nature conservation. Outside the breeding season, the Geeste below the bridge can also be used in the nature reserve with non-motorized watercraft.
