Am Flögelner See is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon town of Geestland in the Cuxhaven district .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG LÜ 326 is around 74  hectares in size. Most of it is part of the FFH area "Ahlen-Falkenberger Moor, Seen bei Bederkesa". In the north-west and east it borders on the “ Ahlen-Falkenberger Moor ” nature reserve, and in the south-east with the “ Holzurburg am Bederkesaer See ” nature reserve . The area has been under nature protection since July 6, 2018. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Cuxhaven.

The nature reserve is north of Bad Bederkesa . It protects the bank areas in the west and south of the Flögelner See with the upstream, around 15 meter wide shallow water zone, the Flögelner lake drainage and a several hundred meter long section of the Elbe-Weser shipping route to the municipal boundary of Steinau . The nature reserve links the nature reserves “Ahlen-Falkenberger Moor” and “Holzurburg am Bederkesaer See”.

The riparian zones in the protected area are of well-developed Verlandungs vegetation with reeds and wetland thickets dominated to which reed beds of reeds and water vapors , Sedge , willow thickets of gray willow and ear willow and alder and birch swamp forests with alder and downy birch connect. In the north-west and south-east of the Flögelner See there are moist grassland areas that are grazed or used as hay meadows. Small areas of bog forests with a relatively high proportion of old and dead wood exist. The downy birch dominates here. Pipe grass, peat moss and dwarf shrubs also settle here .

The dense Flögelner lake drainage, which is interrupted by a weir , through which the water level of the Flögelner lake can be regulated, is accompanied by species-rich bank vegetation. Dominating the reedbeds, sedge Riede and Hochstaudenfluren . In places willow and alder bushes falter. The area of ​​the (silted up) Selmsee, which is dominated by reed beds and swamp forest with birch and alder, is included in the nature reserve. Small bodies of water can be found here, which go back to abandoned fish ponds and which were able to develop relatively naturally.

The nature reserve is the habitat of species-rich flora and fauna, including several endangered species. So settle here u. a. Marsh calla , marsh marigold , buttercup , common loosestrife , meadowsweet , bittersweet nightshade , water mint , marsh fern , marsh grass , common sedge , panicle and sedge and nail bush . The waters are habitat u. a. of eel , bleak , pike , sea ​​trout , burbot and mud whip . Reptiles and amphibians are in the nature reserve z. B. represented by grass snake , adder and moor frog, dragonflies u. a. by moon azure mermaid , Nordic moss damsel and feather dragonfly , butterflies by medium and brown-spotted mother-of-pearl moths and grasshoppers by the short-winged sword insect and the multi-bellied grasshopper .

The nature reserve is also the habitat of marsh harrier , cuckoo , nightingale , bluethroat , whinchat , reed warbler , skylark , small woodpecker , water rail , great crested grebe and kingfisher . In the winter months rest in the nature reserve u. a. Krick- , Spoon , Tableware , heron , whistling and Gadwall , seeds , Bläss- and Gray Goose , grebes, Smew , Goosander , laughter and common gull and tern .

The area is also home to the otter , which uses the Flögelner lake drainage as a walking corridor. Pond bat and other bat species use the area as a hunting area and flight corridor.

The nature reserve borders mainly on intensively used grasslands in the south of the Flögelner See and along the Flögelner Seewflow, from which it is separated in the south of the lake by a road and along the lake outflow by the walling. It is crossed by the road from Flögeln to Steinau south of the Flögelner See. Other crossings in the area of Flögelner Seeabflusses limited to rural roads . It is bordered by public roads to the north and west. The protected area on the south-west bank of the Flögelner See is directly adjacent to the residential development of Flögeln . The garden areas are separated from the nature reserve by the sea dike. An area in the south-west of the lake with a more frequented shore area, where there is also a small beach area and several jetties, is excluded from the scope of the nature conservation ordinance.

On the south bank of the Flögelner See there is an observation tower from which the lake and its shoreline can be seen.
