The Lower Oste is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon communities of Oberndorf , Cadenberge and the Flecken Neuhaus (Oste) in the combined community of Land Hadeln in the district of Cuxhaven and the community of Balje in the combined community of Nordkehdingen in the district of Stade .

The " Schnook, outer dyke areas near Geversdorf " nature reserve, designated in 2004, has merged into the "Untere Oste" nature reserve. To the north are the nature reserves " Ostesee " and " Wildvogelreservat Nordkehdingen ". The area has been under protection since November 17, 2017. The responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of Cuxhaven and Stade.

The nature reserve is located east of Neuhaus (Oste). It extends from the mouth of the Moor hustlers Fleths east of Cadenberge to Ostesperrwerk northeast of Neuhaus (Oste) and represents a section of the tide -influenced lower reaches of the Oste with the bedeichten floodplain protected. Above Neuhaus (Oste), a small area behind the dike line and at Neuhaus (Oste) the mouth of the floodplain and parts of the outer dike areas between Neuhaus (Oste) and the Oste are included in the nature reserve.

Reeds and grassland (near Geversdorf)

The nature reserve is characterized by the meandering course of the Oste and the accompanying large-scale grassland areas of different usage intensities and degrees of moisture as well as fallow land, tall herbaceous meadows , reeds and sedge beds . On the banks of the river there are river mudflats of various sizes. The grasslands, which are criss-crossed by ditches, clumps and, in some cases, tidal creeks , are used as meadow and pasture . Due to the influence of brackish water, alluvial forest bushes are only found sporadically. The area of the Schnook east of Geversdorf is from an oxbow lake , crossed the Oste, the Dowen Oste.

Due to the sometimes intensive use of the grasslands, which often extend as far as the eastern bank, the typical natural meadow landscape is only available to a limited extent. This is to be promoted in the nature reserve through an extensification of use. Thanks to the operation of the eastern barrier, the floodplain is no longer flooded during storm surges . The floods, which only occur sporadically, cause the floodplain to be flooded due to the lack of brackish water. This is to be counteracted by an increase in flooding events and the reconnection of existing tidal creeks to the Oste, so that salt marsh communities can potentially develop again .

The nature reserve is crossed at Geversdorf by the state road 111 between Neuhaus (Oste) and Freiburg / Elbe . Otherwise, only paths leading to the development of the agricultural areas in the nature reserve, which are closed to public traffic.
